Samson and Delilah

I know a lot of people who hate this song, but I'm a fan. Its a nice sing-a-long. Heck, I even like the album version. Dig the Hornby piano.
Transition to chorus was really sloppy, and awkward. Yikes. I feel like the solo could be a lot better here=letdown.

Iko Iko

If I wanted the Coral Reefer Band...

In response to "Drums" being a bathroom/drink run song...listen to this. Listening to this in my office, I'm tempted to go get some coffee. Screw it, I'm going to just to keep with the live spirit.

The back-to-back of the NoMSGJam/Drums/Space nearly killed me.

Looks Like Rain

Between this and Iko Iko, there is a serious halt going on with the show. I can appreciate a song like LLR, but really only after a scorcher and you need some cool down time.

That said, diggin' the vocals.

Looks Like Rain -> He's Gone -> No MSG Jam -> Drums -> Space -> Standing On the Moon... is so far the best sequence of the show so far, by my count, actually. He's Gone trades its usual space and subtlety for really uncharacteristically overzealous echo effects, but it's still He's Gone, and the total space out of it is actually the only inspiring/adventurous thing I've heard so far out of this show other than Deal.

He's Gone

The song everyone thinks is called "Steal Your Face". This is nice. I really like this song, and don't mind its length, and unlike the other slow songs in this set, don't mind that either.

No MSG Jam>Drums>Space

Well into Drums. There is some crazy reverb and effects going on 'round 6:30. Dang.

Into Space now. I'm listening to this with 3 other people around me. They seem slightly horrified.

I think that's when Drums surpasses Space and becomes Claustrophobia.

Well, I'm finished this show. First set's alright, and I'll keep the second set from He's Gone onward, but am generally scratching my head about the keyboards sound that washes everything in camp psychedelia. Interesting note that this is apparently the first setlisted "Space" to happen in dozens and dozens of shows.

There are 36 Dick's Picks? Indeed, autumn down the tube.

This is the thread that some people might find this interesting, a GD mix by GD (Greg Davis):

Standing On The Moon

I really like this song. I've read this is also one of Garcia and Hunter's favorite songs that they wrote. I remember when I first got into the Dead, I bought the best of the Arista years. This was on there, and was definitely a standout track.

This is an adequate rendition, and I guess as far as when this was released on Built To Last, this live version is right in the wheelhouse of when it was written and fresh. Garcia's vocals sound craggy, and like an old man. It adds to the appeal here. Minimal accompaniment.

Could be my favorite track on this set.

This and Tennessee Jed really are pretty terrible. Tennessee Jed is a fucking abomination.

This whole set was almost as bad as I expected, but I actually like Hell in a Bucket and the Dylan covers, Iko Iko, and Stagger Lee.

I also feel the sudden urge to put on some too short Patagonia shorts, and a too tight polo with the collar up, and smoke a geeked joint ;)

The second set brought be down and by the third I was crying to be let out. The second it ended I was out the doors with the hounds looking for the Life. I think tomorrow we ought to flip it around and do something from '68 or '69. I'm thinking of this one:

Yeah, jsh 36 Dick's Picks, plus the Download Series and all those "Complete" shows. But I'm sure we'll all be long gone by that point.

Sounds like we already need a 'course correction' to this experiment, so Vol. 22 it is! Like I said, I wanted to start off on the wrong foot, and I think we found the Dead equivalent of The Brown Note, and have disgusted 9/10 boarders just by mentioning we were doing this. I can't wait until this has 50 pages of replies and dominates the board for the rest of the year.

I haven't bothered with too many of the dick's picks series...even when I was in my hippie/dead phase, but the one I really did like vol. 6 (Hartford Civic Center 83') for: Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain > Estimated Prophet > Eyes Of The World

I'm sure there are people here who think they hate the Dead, but if early Dead came out today, hipsters would be salivating.

Ok, we're through the set, and yeah it was a struggle at points, but I'm glad I did it because a)I've never heard this show and b)I really haven't explored later-period Dead shows. This wasn't without some highlights as noted in my earlier posts.

I kept thinking of my bro-in-law who is a Deadhead, and while he's probably heard this, I kept thinking "would I recommend this?" I think we can all agree this wasn't a great period, and while I'm sure there are some gems floating around, this is not one of them.

Looking forward to doing this again.

I'll nuke Vol.9 and up Vol.22 tonight for interested listeners. This is a good set for tomorrow.

you might be right, but as every proponent of this thread would agree, that's by no means an indication that it's a good thing.

actually, that's probably the only thing that could shut this thread down.
