I bought a set of Sennheiser PX 100's a few years back, but they fell out of repair several months ago. They still sell them on amazon, but I'm wondering whether they've been replaced by a newer model, or if there are other favorites in the $40 or less range to look at.

While we are at it, I'm considering buying some sitting-around-at-home, open headphones. Preferably <$250, but I'm in no hurry, so I'm keeping my options open. I'm replacing my Sennheiser 280s, which I've enjoyed.

Just buy another pair of PX 100's. I don't think they've improved them, and I honestly don't know how they could.

The Sennheiser 595 model sells for <$200 now. If you're thinking very long-term I'd save more and get the 600's or 650's, but the 595's are still an incredible deal, especially if you're not using a fancy headphone amp.

If you liked the 100's I'd suggest going for the PX 200's. They're only about 10-15 bucks more and they're solid. I've got a pair for traveling.

I listened to a pair of those $300 Dr. Dre headphones at Best Buy the other day, and they are easily the best I've ever heard. Of course, at that price, they'd better be.

I'm no audiophile and I've got a pair of the Sennheiser HD-212 pros and they sound great to me. Under $100 I think.

The only issue is that they aren't truly "over the ear". They kind of just rest on the ears.

agreed. i bought mine on Amazon for dirt cheap, and they sound superior to the Sony Dj phones i had prior that ran me over $150.

for the price, it's almost absurd how amazing they sound.

Quite a few "over-ears" listeners here, even for traveling. I really like my "in-ear" Etymotc ER6i's. Once you get used to the deep, inner ear feeling the noise isolation is phenomenal and the sound quality very well balanced. Not bass heavy, for sure, but still great sound.

I do most of my headphone listening at home, and bass is essential imo. gotta have thick, warm bass.

Those look good, more comfortable than the PX 100. My biggest gripe about the PX 100 was that the foam pads would irritate my ears after extended listening. They also look a little more sturdy.

I am also in the market for new headphones.

I need something totally noise cancelling from my end and the outside world. I play my shit loud, and don't want to piss off people on the train or my office.

I need them to be collapsable as to make them easy to travel with..and hopefully have some sort of padding over the head cause otherwise it leaves an indentation in my chrome dome

Dov,

Depending on your budget, check out the Ultimate Ears Triple.Fi 10's - They are in-ear monitors, so they don't really cancel the sound - they block everything out. While retail price is close to $400 on them you can generally get them on Amazon in the $200 range - that may be on the high end of your budget, but they sound incredible, you can crank them up and you are the only person who will hear them and you will literally occasionally have people tap you on the shoulder because they are yelling at you and you are so isolated that you can't hear them. Also, since they are IEM's they don't go over your head and as such don't leave indentations on your chrome dome :)

I also recommend IEMs over noise-canceling phones. I've got a pair of Shure SE310s replacing the default foam earpieces with cones. Shure gets a relatively bad rep for bass, but I've been very satisfied with these when they're in properly.

If you are looking at In-ear headphones- they you should also consider the Etymotics. You didnt post a price range - so if you are looking <$200 there are the Etymotic HF5s and <$100 there are the ER-6is

Thanks..Ill look into these....I'd be willing to go between $200-300 if i need to, as over the years I have probably spent a lot more because i become dissatisifed and unhappy rather quickly...

I have tended to stay away from the in-ear monitors cause a lot of the time, they start to hurt....

but im open to checking em out! thanks!!

Settled on these. Super comfortable. Sound is great. I hear shit on the outside, and nobody can hear me...

I do not like the idea of having to always have an extra AAA battery on me though for them...

I am gonna live with them for another week, then may return these and explore the in-ear models...

$300 is a lot for earphones....

Change of plans....For the money, I spent, I should be totally 100% satisfied and I wasn't...

When putting the headphones on, they almost created a vacuum, which disturbed my ears and over the course of 10-15 minutes, actually made me a little motion sick while riding the train....Also, was simply not crazy with how the folded up into my bag...

Returned them today, and giving the Solo Beats by Dre pair a try...... Bout $100 less, and more immediate comfort while giving them a test run in the store...They also fold up nice, and are a little smaller overall.

Image

Trying to go by what I can find in stores first....The actual in ear kinds will be my last resort....We shall see..

Update...

I had returned the Beats by Dre as well....too much bass, and they also started to hurt my ears after about 30-40 minutes of wearing them....sigh

i'm on the search again..I may go back to the Bose Quiet Comforts that I had...I still hate the idea of worrying if i have a AAA battery with me at all times though...but sound wise, those were the best of all i had...
