First thought as the strains of the first strings rang off the speakers..."oh no".

Wharf Rat>Terrapin Station

These are actually pretty good, and swung me out of the funk I was experiencing with the show.

(Walk Me Out In The) Morning Dew

If the entire show would've been this passionate it could've been one of the best shows I've heard. So good. Definitely my favorite moment on the record.

I think this is #5 of the 5 we heard this week. Yikes.

Not sure why this show is getting slagged as much as it is. Sure, it's not as spectacular as the earlier era shows we've been listening to, but it's also not as pocked as others we've heard. At this stage, I think it's refreshing to hear a steady set (minus Dick's exclusions, which should be here), that builds to a really strong finish with Wharf Rat -> impromptu Terrapin -> Morning Dew, arguably the most heartfelt suite of songs we've heard yet. Supplication was another highlight for me. And I think Donna, for the fairly minimal amount she contributes to the set, is a welcome presence.

So far I'd rate the shows as this:

1. #4 - Feb '70
2. #22 - Feb '68
3. #3 - May 22 '77
4. #6 - Oct 14 '83
5. #9 - Sep 16 '90

That '70 set is head and shoulders above the rest, IMO. The 89 set is clearly the worst. The rest I think is just which era you like best.

Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks I gues. This was the hardest for me to get into, and ultimately the one...along with the 89 one that I will probably delete.

Ok, I was listening in the car again today so here's my quick hits:

Music Never Stopped - sets a nice '77 groove here. Get ready for a night of funky bass, clavinet and Mu Tron (that quacking auto-wah effect Jerry used a lot). Oh and Donna Jean: Highstepping into time indeed.

Sugaree - a classy love song, very well done here. Never understood though why this song (or any really slow tune) needed the long jam attached.

Lazy Lightining/Supplication - LL may be one of the five dumbest Dead songs ever written but I absolutely love the Supplication jam: fluid and funky and a little crazy. This sort of fushion-y playing is what makes me really dig this era.

Dancin - The Official Disco Dead Version and up until they wrote Shakedown Street, the anthem of this era. There's worse things to tap your feet to.

Help>Slip!>Frank's - I actually like the playing in Help a lot; Jerry's playing is a little more forceful and less effected. This Frank's did very little for me and was a little clunky.

Samson & Delilah - Pretty shoddy work. Everybody probably did something different for their head at set break and now they're off page.

Sunrise - Turned down the volume and made a call.

Estimated - Not a very strong version of this either especially compared to others from this year.

Eyes - Pretty good jam, didn't feel overlong.

Wharf Rat - Enjoyed this a lot especially the heaviness when the drums kick in.

Terrapin - A sort of half assed reading but I'm a fan so it worked out for me.

Morning Dew - Too many Morning Dew's this week so I sorta zoned out. I think it was reaaaaally mellow.

Supplication = Steely Dan influenced?

The pick for Monday is...

Dick's Picks Volume 11

I wanted to do a show of this specific lineup (no Mickey Hart, no Pigpen, and I'm pretty sure no Donna Jean despite what the wiki says) to get a feel on the Dead at their most stripped down. Also, nah one bah two Chuck Berry covers. :D

Dick's Picks Volume 11

Quote:
For the first entry in the Dick's Picks series from 1972, Grateful Dead tape archivist Dick Latvala has made a surprising but satisfying choice. Deadheads might have opted for a more obvious show — such as the August 27, 1972, benefit for the Springfield Creamery in Veneta, OR, that tops many of their lists — but Latvala looked exactly one month later to the middle date in a three-night stand at the Stanley Theater in Jersey City, NJ. The audience tape for this show has not been among the most circulated by Deadheads, perhaps because it is subject to edits, so this full-length version is welcome. No one has questioned the quality of the performance itself: it is stellar, characterized by an unusually slow opening with "Morning Dew" and an especially effective second set dominated by a half-hour "Dark Star" that, for the only known time, segues into "Cumberland Blues." (Okay, maybe you have to be a Deadhead to care about something like that, but then, who else is likely to buy Dick's Picks albums?) It's possible that the Dead have avoided 1972 before this because the under-two-hour triple-LP Europe 1972 album chronicled their live performances well enough at the time. Fair enough, but this three-and-a-quarter-hour triple-CD set does an even better job.

Beat It On Down The Line

Some good ol' rock n' roll with some honky tonk piano thrown in for good measure.

Friend of the Devil

Adequate version of the song. The show has a certain "barndance" feel to it that I hope continues.

Not gonna lie, this was exactly what I needed. Upbeat, toe-tappers.

Big River

Tight playing, and continuing on that same vein...I'm digging very hard this set so far.

First a Cash cover with Big River, and now a Marty Robbins cover. Dang.

End set 1.

Playing In The Band

This has been a tight set, and while there hasn't been anything huge by way of anomalies, its been a a really great set of songs.

Gotta be honest, I didn't like how rushed Jed felt, alongside all the other upbeat numbers in this early set. I'm at El Paso now, and it's been a really tight set. Highlight for me was definitely "Birdsong". Gorgeous tune.

Let me say I'm glad we picked this up for holiday Monday. I can listen to this uninterrupted, and maybe with a jay! Yeah a jay.

That was a pretty monstrous Dark Star to come out of nowhere on an otherwise safe but really good show. A pretty patient jam with a nice rebuild between long-separated verses segues wonderfully into Cumberland Blues just after becoming slightly boring/aimless. I like Cumberland, and haven't heard it enough lately. Attics of My Life directly after is perfect (if not leaving something to be desired in the vocal), and they could've done pretty much everything after that point. Other highlights were a languid Deal, Ramble on Rose, and pretty much the whole first disc. Middleof the pack kind of show in the Dick's we've listened to thus far. Little less safe than Pembroke.

Finished it awhile ago, but got caught up with work.

This has been one of my favorites that we've listened to so far. Yeah, its safe and simple, but sometimes that's ok. Definitely perfect for a Monday morning that was moving a little slow.

Played this nonstop in the car from Boston area to LI, NY. It was the perfect length and just the right tone to keep my attention without getting too noodly. It also got mellow at just the right times to keep me my "asshole quotient" down as I negotiated traffic (well...at least lower than usual).

This show definitely sits among the top of this rising heap. Thx DJ.
