Dark Star is playing along nicely.

If can even DL that Winterland set this week, no less spin one or two, I will declare success. Thx from me as well, e-stone.

While shorter than what we are used to, this is a really solid set. Not sure if Dark Star is finally clicking with me or that was just a particularly good version.

Was that a live segue into Sugar Magnolia or a studio production? I'll want to go back and listen again. It's pretty perky, nonetheless.

#33:

Finally got a chance to listen to this yesterday, flying coast to coast, albeit in an Ativan haze, so there are definite holes.

Show 1 - Cassidy remains a highlight. It's perfectly tight and short. Lazy Lightnin' into Supplication was really good. This is a very well constructed first set, I love all the songs. St. Stephen seemed like a sludgy mess. And the NFA out of it was terribly lethargic. I'm nonplussed by some of the segue sandwiches they're prone to – see Dancin'->Wharf Rat->Dancin' – like this St. Stephen, simply for a sense of closure. I much prefer the Help->Slip->Drums->Samson->Slip->Franklin's. Totally refreshing alternate take on the usual trio.

Show 2 - It must've been good because I don't remember it. The Wharf Rat in the middle of Dancing is heartbreaking, but seems totally out of place between those bookends. The Wheel->Space->Other One->Stella Blue was a highlight like the last night's Help suite.

Very good show, but I'll have to return to it. Now that I'm home again, back on track.

This might be my favourite 'Dark Star', save perhaps for the 29 min version from Volume 4.

Really nice Dark Star. A bit of an "Eyes of the World" jam around 15 minutes or so adds to the string of thematic Dark Star jams we're coming across. Good segue into Sugar Magnolia, and I already like this version more than any standalone Sugar Mags.

Yeah, this is a nice Sugar Magnolia too. I chose this set because it's the offset of the Pigpen years (I think he's even still alive at this point, but not playing with the band) but before they really transitioned into 70s Dead.

Sounds like they could segue into Cold Rain and Snow at 9 minutes of GDTRFB. Not sure if that's even possible given the early date of this show? Anyway, this is proving to be a great no bullshit suite of songs, much better than the SS->NFA from #33, which I needed.

DJ, I'm assuming it's a major hassle to archive these links, eh? I wanted to bring a buddy of mine up to speed on our infatuation project, but apparently some links are expired. No sweat, we can track em down otherwise, and I'll keep him up-to-date from here on in.

The Empire State Building to be Lit in Honor of the Grateful Dead

New York’s iconic Empire State Building will be lit up with special tie-dye colors in honor of the Grateful Dead this evening. The tribute coincides with Bob Weir and Phil Lesh’s scheduled appearance this Wednesday at a fundraiser for the New York Historical Society’s upcoming Grateful Dead exhibit. As previously reported, The Grateful Dead: Now Playing at the New York Historical Society will open this spring, tracing the band’s career and achievements through a wealth of original artwork and documents. Materials in the exhibition will be drawn almost exclusively from the extraordinary holdings of the Grateful Dead Archive at the University of California Santa Cruz, established in 2008.

Bob Weir & RatDog will kick off a multi-night, multi-venue New York run this evening. Tonight’s show will take place a few blocks from the Empire State Building at the Manhattan Center’s Grand Ballroom.

Short, tight set. Good way to start my day!

I think the easiest thing to do would be to hook you up with the dvds rather than waste all the time of upping them our whole collection.

I too enjoyed the short and furious nature of today's show. That Sugar Mag was just plain nasty.

Yeah, WAAAAY too much good music going on in this thread.

Let's it take it down at least 3 notches: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick's_Picks_Volume_27

Dick's Picks Volume 27

Image

Quote:
This 27th instalment in the Dick's Picks series is primarily derived from the Grateful Dead's December 16, 1992 performance at the Oakland Coliseum Arena -- with bonus material consisting of a quartet of tunes taken from the following evening's show at the same venue. It is also the first volume to feature theGrateful Dead's final line-up with former Tubes keyboardist Vince Welnick, who joined the band following the demise of Brent Mydland in 1990. Initially, Welnick was paired with Bruce Hornsby, who can be heard on the respective 9th and 17th releases in the catalogue. However, by mid '92 Hornsby had all but returned to his solo gig, although he would occasionally sit in as a guest on grand piano and accordion. Owing to health related issues surrounding Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals), the Dead declined to tour during the late summer and fall of that year, ultimately returning to the concert stage in early December. The brief respite did the band a world of good as demonstrated by the generally motivated performance. Their set lists likewise show signs of invigoration with the incorporation of several notable covers. These range from the Bob Weir (guitar/vocals) led reading of Willie Dixon's bluesy "Same Thing," to the double-shot medley of the Who's "Baba O' Riley" which seamlessly winds into a profound rendering of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows" -- both of which are prime vehicles for Welnick's criminally underrated vocals. Although the '90s contained what by all accounts could be considered spotty (at best) performances, the Dead mix an insightful musical maturity with copious measures of spirited instrumental interaction. This dichotomy produces a wistful "Row Jimmy" and plaintive "Ship Of Fools" as well as one of the more rambunctious and profound "Not Fade Away"'s to have come from the band during their final years. Worthy of note is the abbreviated "Dark Star" which contains the second verse only and concludes a version which began four nights earlier.

We started strong, but this The Same Thing has sapped the energy, imo. Very strong Brown Eyed Woman, though.

Oh yeah! I think it's a nice opener, especially into Brown Eyed Woman
