True, but I've actually found this set/recording to be pretty flat otherwise. Good Bertha>Good Lovin' segue, though.

New Minglewood is smokin' fun here on Disc 3. Despite the low tempo 'Friend of the Devil/Looks like Rain/Loser' were great as well. Especially Looks Like Rain, which contained some Donna Jean that didn't make me want to rip my genitals apart.

I woke up at 330AM with a very dry mouth and 'Tennessee Jed' in my head.

It really, really is. I tend to view this as two different bands because the differentiation by era is so remarkably different in terms of feel, and whereas my appreciation previously was the '68-72 psych-blooze I definitely get the '77 period now.

Fair to say that we've heard 4 different bands to this point?

early psych-blooze
clean & disco dead
spotty spacey eighties
the epilogue

I had a horrible dream last night. I should be so lucky as you.

I would divide up the early period into two parts, basically from the inception of the band to about 1970 is the early psych-blooze, then the Mickey Hart-less early 70's (which you could almost sub divide into pre and post Pigpen) is a sort of cross breed Americana and Psych--this should probably be called the "Europe '72 Era".

I'd buy that.

This Ramble on Rose is killer.

I just started the Thurs/Fri set. Good choice, Dump.

For Monday, I am finding a choice that includes Must Have Been the Roses.

I wish the vocals weren't so weak on Werewolves. I think they could have had real fun with that one.

Not sure if this is accurate or meaningful at all but here's a rough rundown of my preferred picks that we've heard so far, updated for week 2 & 3 from week 1. What a long strange yada yada yada. All the bold are new additions, and all the new additions are middle of the pack shows. #11 wins on account of Dark Star->Cumberland and an otherwise clean show; #30 is the Bo Diddley Show and was the dark horse for me; #16 for its rawness, #7 for Weather->Stella and Truckin'->Wharf Rat, #33 for sheer monstrosity, #2 for sweet brevity. I didn't really care much for today's (#25), though it's definitely a good show.

1. #4 - Feb '70
2. #22 - Feb '68
#11 Aug 27, '72
#30 Mar 28, '72
#16 Nov 8, '69
#7 Sep 9-11, '74
#33 Oct 9-10, '76
#2 Oct 31, '71
#25 May 10-11, '78
#27 Dec 16, '92

3. #3 - May 22 '77
4. #6 - Oct 14 '83
5. #9 - Sep 16 '90

This thread is awesome. I might listen to nothing but these shows for the next month. Sorry, Dirty Projectors and Grizzly Bear.

Awesome. I say we get the nay-sayers to commit to listening through just one Dick's Picks of our choosing, too. Our own commentary seems to be waning a bit, 23 pages in.

We'll pick it up on Monday. Some of us can't do the track by track like FR was doing.

Yeah, I listened to the '92 show yesterday so I'm completely caught up. Not much to say about the show; there were some high's (Feel Like A Stranger, Peggy O,) very few out and out lows (ok The Same Thing blew) and a lot of in the middle. Baba O Reilly was fun and the Dylan covers were workmanlike.

I don't really mind the Vince Welnick era maybe because its the only version I ever actually saw.

I won't say she should have been killed, despite wishing it many times, because she can occasionally bring something to a tune. I mean, that's why she's in the Hall of Fame right?

Dick's Picks Vol. 31

Image

Quote:
This four-disc volume has been extracted from three consecutive 1974 dates, at the Philadelphia Civic Center in Philly (August 4 and 5) and Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, NJ (August 6). Enthusiasts generally consider this era as one of the Grateful Dead's most consistent during their three-decade performance history. At the core of the mid-'70s lineup are Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals), Bill Kreutzmann (drums), Phil Lesh (bass/vocals), and Bob Weir (guitar/vocals). The quartet were joined in 1971 by the husband-and-wife team of Donna Jean Godchaux (vocals) and Keith Godchaux (piano). Incrementally, this incarnation began distancing the band's sound from the R&B-meets-psychedelia of the Ron "Pigpen" McKernan years, as well as the more recent rural twang heard on Workingman's Dead (1970) and American Beauty (1970). Instead, their collective fusion-based explorations continually challenge the musicians, while simultaneously providing fresh extensions and visages on familiar favorites. Nowhere is this more evident than on "Playing in the Band." After introducing the number in their repertoire (circa February of 1971), they cultivated it from a fairly rote and otherwise typical rendering into an unexpurgated show-stopping centerpiece -- as shown by the pair of 20-plus minute excursions on Dick's Picks, Vol. 31 (2004). They not only clock in at nearly half an hour apiece, but each is distinctive and examines the Grateful Dead's ability to end up at different places, despite the similarities in the point(s) of departure. Other lengthy and melodically sinuous passages include "Weather Report Suite," which trails into a medley with "Wharf Rat" and "U.S. Blues," as well as the coupling of "He's Gone" and "Truckin'." These are contrasted by shorter yet no less expressive readings of old favorites "Jack Straw," "Sugar Magnolia," and "Casey Jones," as well as a stunning "Uncle John's Band." Equal time is also given to recent arrivals "Loose Lucy," "Ship of Fools," the aforementioned "U.S. Blues," and two wholly unique "Scarlet Begonias." The longevity of the newer numbers is manifest by the fact that they would all remain key entries in the Grateful Dead's ever-expanding repertoire.
