yeah really, what can you say about this show? it's near perfect. especially considering the context, the acoustic set is spellbinding. second set it only takes them 5 minutes to find their way to drums, which is absurd. the build up to cosmic charlie and the song itself itself is great. good lovin' and it's a man's world are huge highlights, and dancing in the streets (the premier version we've heard) rivals viola lee blues for best jam. i have been familiar with this pick for some time, at least the acoustic set, but hearing it at this juncture, 24 volumes in, really shows that it's a cut above, and, like the post-indian summer, might serve to get me through til the end, with a deserved break tomorrow.

Yeah, I actually noticed halfway through Dancin that I *shudder* liked what I was hearing

because it doesn't sound like itself. this show sounds like it's in a really crucial window between that initial garage sound and the clean levity of the early 70s. something that probably happened very few times.

Damn, this starts STRONG. The acoustic format fits the material well. I can see why this is a famous show.

Totally, they should have done more of this! After hearing 'I Know You Rider' so many times now, it's really nice to hear a cooled down acoustic rendering.

After listening to the Dead for years, and never really having an association with either of these songs, they are easily two of my faves from the oeuvre.

Overall, I'd rank this in the Top 10 just for the acoustic set alone. I also see why is probably the one Dick's Pick that the casual fan would enjoy the most, as it's easily the most digestible with plenty of straight-up versions of some of their most popular songs.

I'd rank top 5 easily, for the depth of the material and the range they play through. I don't find the electric set to be as accessible as some of the '72 stuff we've heard. I can't name which though.

Quote:
The first 17 volumes of Dick's Picks never got around to including Grateful Dead concert material from the year 1978, an oversight corrected with the 18th volume. The archivists have avoided obvious choices, instead focusing on a brief Midwest tour and constructing a lengthy three-disc set from three successive shows: February 3 in Madison, WI, February 4 in Milwaukee, and February 5 in Cedar Falls, IA. (Only the Madison and Cedar Falls shows are credited.) A composite first set has been assembled on the first disc, with the second disc containing the second set in Madison from the third song on, and the third disc containing all of the Cedar Falls second set except the encore. The jury-rigged first set is an interesting combination of old and recent material, but the meat of the album comes on the second and third discs, which feature long medleys full of exploratory instrumental passages. The second disc contains a combination of four songs that runs more than 66 minutes without a break; the third disc has three sections, including two medleys of approximately half an hour apiece. The song selection and the band's treatment of the material provide a representative look at the Dead's career in 1978. Seven of the tunes are among their ten most played songs of that year, each turning up more than 30 times in 80 shows. And the performances are typical, with first-set songs like "Passenger" and "The Music Never Stopped" getting feisty treatment, while the second sets run on and on with the kind of unhurried improvising that delights Deadheads and bores people not attuned to the band's tendencies. Dick's Picks, Vol. 18 is not one of the Dead's best live albums, but it does provide a previously missing part of the ongoing aural history of the band, and so will be valuable to fans.

That Harpur College set is the first one that I heard; I bought it as a gift for my Deadhead wife. And yeah, it's pretty much the best damn thing that I ever heard from that band. A phenomenal set.

**************************WEEKEND BONUS LISTENING*****************************

The second set of this show (starting with the Jam>Jack A Roe) has been a favorite of mine for years, i taped it off of the Grateful Dead Radio hour back in the day. Its pretty much why I love "Jack A Roe" and "If I Had The World To Give" and may have led me to becoming a sucker for the fusion-y Disco Dead.

Check it out

I love that you can just stream these archive.org shows without downloading.
