Confirm this.

We've been dealing with some of this shit in my family as well here lately. My positive spin was "Hey, at least its now and not 20 or 30 years ago"

I was informed by my Dad during the Packer game tonight that my mom found out today that she has Breast Cancer. We'll know more tomorrow.

Jesus.

Very, very sorry Dave, DHRj, and Rads. Keep us all posted, please.

Eerily timely thread. It's been a strange year, hasn't it?

I'm hoping for the best possible outcomes for all of you. You'll all be in my thoughts and prayers.

Post in which routine bathetic bromides become relatively real:

Dealing with the end of year (to a horrible year) in which I have to cut millions of more dollars and lay off people with families right at the holidays and my own job and career are seriously in question.. and I have my health, my partner is healthy, no family member has serious illness... truly time to stop and reflect on what's important.

Good wishes and positive energy to Dave, DHRj, and Rads and those you love who have this challenge.

Report released just this morning .... cancer mortality in men reduced 20% in the last decade (1996-2006) and 12% in women. Colo-rectal one of the kinds of cancer in which progress has been made. The usual "you can beat this, there is so much they can do now, people are living with cancer these days...." is true. Keeping that positive attitude isn't just a hopeful self-fulfilling prophecy... it is statistical.

There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in. - Leonard Cohen

My Mom passed away from breast cancer bout 8 years ago.
not easy, nor fun. I am not religious in any sense, but I do buy into the old theory that 'nature' doesnt give you anything that you can't find a way to deal with naturally. We spoke with a rabbi during the last few days, and he explained (in a way I never could), how this is a part of life, and yadda yadda.... I am not religious by any degree today, but I found comfort in speaking with him regardless.

Positive thoughts are a must....The mind is the most powerful medicine. Makes it easier.

best wishes to all y'all

its T3, which means the cancer is through the wall of the bowel, but the good news is that it has not spread to the lymph nodes or other organs. he will need chemo/radiation for about 6 weeks, so he'll get through the holidays fine. doc sounded positive.

yeah, we learned this morning that it hasn't spread and we caught it VERY early...thank goodness. We find out tomorrow what type of surgery they want to do and whether or not they're gonna do radiation but this is very manageable.

Women, this is why you get regular mammograms...

I just heard (somewhere), that mammograms contains super low degrees of something that causes breast cancer actually...

well, not if we go by what that "advisory panel" suggested, in that women don't need mammograms until age 50 and that self-exams don't do much. All utter shite of course. Every woman I've known who had breast cancer got it in her late 30s/40s. The thing I find funny about all of this is people who are so hellbent against public healthcare options and cry "Don't ration my healthcare" can't seem to see that that's EXACTLY what panels like this and the insurance companies are ALREADY DOING. [/rant]

Regardless, I am thinking of all of you and your families and dogpiling positive thoughts.

thanks man. he'll have to wear a pump for a couple of months that automatically dispenses the chemo, and then go to Anderson (20 minutes away) for daily radiation. and then surgery in February. but the doc says it's 'totally curable'

and i imagine the doc saying that in a malibu stoner voice

Damn. Dave, Jon, Rads... sorry it's directly affecting you. Cancer is all around us, so it's not surprising that fellow Ob's would be affected, you just never really think it's going to happen.

Sidenote: femdisco is a medical oncology social worker. Her work life is cancer, so I also see how it takes its toll on the caregivers.

My good friend Kerri died last night fighting cancer the second time. She was diagnosed with breast cancer, fought it off, and then was diagnosed again this summer. She's in the middle in the pic. Loved her so much. Probably the most genuinely nice and happy person I've ever met. Dunno why I'm posting it here, other than I need an outlet.
