from Williams-Sonoma

We had a credit from a returned wedding gift, another gift certificate from a student, and an amex gift certificate from another student.

I really want a kitchen aid mixer for pasta and bread, and the meat grinder for making steak tartare, and steak burgers, and eventually sausages, but deena doesn't understand that the mixer I inherited from her sucks. I also really want a mandoline, and she's like, well you've got nice knives.

All this may be true, but then don't ask a guy what he wants and then ignore him when he really wants to move up to a double neck pedal steel (by selling the single neck and then a bit of cash), and then gives you an out with the stand mixer or the mandoline.

I on the other hand knew she wanted quality china instead of the piecemeal stuff we brought into the relationship. So we got a bomb deal on china service for 12, plus she got a cheese slicer (she's from wisconsin, cheese is a religion), and i got a rolling pin that i really needed and we only spent $40 out of pocket.

I still have a single neck pedal steel, which is awesome. Stupid addictive instrument.

After that 20 minute mandoline talk, neither of us got one - Dern!

I did get one of those olive-wood boxes for keeping salt.

We have a good mixer, but I haven't ventured into making pasta and bread yet - but I'm gonna try that no-knead self rising we spoke about asap. Possibly for new year's day.

don't be scared of the yeast, or even of kneading.

You've got a good stand mixer, it's probably got dough hooks for kneading.

Try the ligurian foccacia recipe at http://www.rusticocooking.com/bread.htm

it's easy, it's delicious, it's great if you want to improvise, and it requires no kneading or multiple rises.

yeah, kind of a bummer about the mandoline, but i could have gotten it while we were there, i could just tell her heart wasn't into it by the way she was nonchalantly avoiding the north half of the store where the china was.

And I figured that it was better to get that than to fritter it away on piddling little shit i don't really need for the house, like an ebelskiver pan.

very nice. Having fun I hope, and not getting too frustrated.

Jam with people as soon as you can.

Its not really frustrating at all so far. Years of fiddling around with blues guitar has left me with all the theory I need, its just getting used to the movements. Apparently when it was being ordered though every salesman in the guitar center it came from remarked that it was the first time that they had ever sold one. Not a hot ticket item in NJ I guess.

And I also got a $50 gift card to CHICK-FIL-A, which was pretty awesome too.

As for my dad, I had looked into getting his Guild Thunderbass amp head fixed for Christmas, but the price tag I was quoted was just way more than I could afford right now. Still planning on having it done, I'll just have to save up some dough for a while to do so. In the mean time, we got him one of these:

Anyway he really likes it and it works well with his old cabs, no buzzing or stray noise. He's been playing his bass again around the clock. I had forgotten how good he was too, which is pretty cool.

My wife is fiending for one as well. We went and looked at some tonight while we were out, but they're really pricey. We should've bought the refurbed one we saw a few months ago. I told her I'm sure they are cheaper online though.

They're still effing expensive online.

But it's the kind of thing that'll outlast the person using it.

I got one in 1995 and it's still a workhorse. Well worth the money.

As for me and my xmas, it was a light year but meaningful....

- money
- cookbook
- scarf
- cute mittens
- necklace
- earrings
- peace of mind and lots of love

edit: oh and I just realized that aside from my mortgage payment, I will start 2010 with zero debt.

I got a combined total of $55 worth of iTunes gift cards and assorted candies in my stockings. This year was all about the kiddoes. Youngest got a Nintendo DSi, which he has had pretty much continuously welded to his hands for the past 37 hours, confirming the legitimacy of said purchase.

Yeah - I played through a small combo (same brand) the past 3-4 trips to guitar center to try out new basses, and it sounded really nice...

I'm working on that for myself - already into it for a cheap suit (then nicely tailored). Looking new bass ($500 or under) and some other treats are up next...

Do you even bother to try to wrestle the DSi away from him, or do you just let him go non-stop? We got my 6 year old a DS and he won't stop playing Tecmo Bowl. He is a football nut.

Main thing I got was my oldest son took a small picture (maybe 9x12) and had it digitally blown and restored up to poster size and framed- the B&W pic is of me at the anti-war march on 11/15/69 in D. C. (the largest one) with the Washington Monument in the background. For Christian , was very impressive. And I love it.

Exactly. She's at that assumption now. I was just hoping to save her like $50 or something. But yeah, she's got some money burning a hole in her pocket, which means I expect one to arrive any day now.

How is this CD? I was actually in attendence at Reading that year (as well as the following year) So I will probably get it just for the nostolgic factor. As for X-mas, I didn't get blown up by mr. taliban, so I'm pretty happy with that.
