Mostly, my friends do have good taste in music. I've been turned on to a lot of stuff by my friends, and vice-versa.

Some of my friends have good taste, particularly the few that I know that are in bands. They tend to be a little more "aware" or whatever you want to call it. The main thing I've noticed, though, is that while my friends like music, no one seems to be as crazy about it as I am. So, I constantly push shit on them and while they listen they provide rare, ambiguous feedback and just seem generally disinterested.

some of them do.

and what i mean is that they at least try to not be fed new music by a corporate machine. they go to shows, visit certain sites to find new bands, ask around and go record shopping to make discoveries. i may not agree with all of their favorites, but at least they're making the effort. some people like great bands, but only because they're picking the 9+ pitchfork reviews, any of metacritic's top 10, avclub's As, etc. that's the same as people letting the top 40 chart direct their music collection.

I just realized how few people I would classify as friends, really, who aren't on this board, and got a little depressed. I got a shitload of acquaintances - neighbors, coworkers, etc, but in the Big F camp, the vast majority will likely read this.

Of the non-boarders, there is one couple who dig stuff up a lot and surprise me, which is cool. Usually he hears things on xmu and tracks them down, and then every so often the mrs and I will rattle off who we've been digging this year and he'll jot names down to go try out.

i consider most of you to have a good taste in music that i totally disagree with.

it's more that you're actively listening to music and thinking about it.
i'd say about half of my friends do that too.

i have one or two friends with almost my identical musical taste.

There's this kid here at work who was born the year I graduated high school. He's still young enough to like cool shit. He goes to Bonnarroo and ACL. Likes MMJ and M. Ward and stuff. Definitely Obner worthy, but I couldn't get him to join up. I'm a crappy recruiter. Everyone else I know in real life has terrible taste in music - pretty much 100% bottom feeders.

Pretty much. This I have a few folks I send music to, but they're not exactly my friends.

Not really. I've converted two friends to listening past college bands and mainstream bands.

I have friends who are interested enough in music to look beyond the hype and magazine covers but even then you are probably only sharing 25% of the things you like.

If you are looking for people with exactly the same taste as you and aren't generic yourself then it's going to be a long search.

This used to be the case for me until 2002 when most of them realized Widespread Panic, Talking Heads and Drive By Truckers weren't the only bands on the planet. Kind of coincided with the release of My Morning Jacket - It Still Moves. As traditional as that record sounded, it was the first time some of those ya-hoos had ever ventured outside of their inner-circles to find that there is tons of good music out there if you seek it out for yourself.

The original impetus for joining CMJ BB back in October 2000 (fucking scary) was because only two of my friends had good taste in music and I needed to discuss the new stuff with other music obsessives.

there is a guy at my work who graduated high school the year i was born who i talk with about music. we met at a diversity training when i mentioned i liked music. first thing he turned me onto was todd rundgren. he is the odd person who prefers xtc from skylarking and beyond more than before then.

I don't discuss music with most of the people I know anymore. I have a couple friends that love music and are open to new bands, but its always me showing them new stuff, almost never the other way around. My coworkers listen to Billy Joel or Lady Gaga. I've tried introducing new music to people, but its a very frustrating, pointless endeavor.

The largest frustration is my wife - we have a lot in common, but music isn't one of those things. She has zero interest in new music. She has ABBA greatest hits and time-life knockoffs in her car. Not much I can do to change that, though god knows I've tried.

I know there are people around my town (25,000 population college town) who have good taste in music, and maybe I should just make some new friends. Most of them seem much younger than me though, and it feels like such a pathetic chore. This lack of musical connection with actual people (no offence, obnoids!) is probably a large part of my current ennui with music.

Thank god for Dale's 2010 thread! :)

I'm in love with a girl.
She occasionally plays Taylor Swift.

I have a handful of friends that read Pitchfork or find new music through Pandora, but generally they look to me for new music. I don't talk about music with the other 75% of people I hang out with.

well first off, I dont have many people locally that I call friends. Second, as I get older, the musical taste of friends seems to be less important (i.e. it doesn't come up as often as it used to). Having said that, most of the people I consider friends have sufficiently developed taste in music that they are not passive consumers of music.

Most of my friends are into music and have pretty good taste. I mean, sure, we all have our preferences and disagree on stuff. but, I don't really know many people at all that aren't at least somewhat into music.
