I'm not ashamed to say that I like the new Vampire Weekend. It's totally harmless pop music.

That new Shearwater on the other hand...holy fucking terrible.

I remembered liking it, but I admittedly haven't listened to it in a while. I put it on my phone though so I can refresh my memory at some point this week.

Totally harmless, but not entirely convincing.

I do like it. I am not willing to now listen to MGMT to make the comparison or see if I like them too. They sucked horribly live.

I do think Graceland was one of the most influential (or favourite) albums of my childhood and lifetime. I think the "added pretense" comes in this being sonic-cultural appropriation another degree removed a generation later.

And it's nowhere near as good as Graceland.

My algorithm that determines various degrees of pretense Wrote:
Paul Simon was born in Newark, New Jersey to Jewish Hungarian parents Bella, an elementary school teacher, and Louis Simon, bassist.

Ezra Koenig and his parents lived on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Koenig is the fourth generation of his family to attend an Ivy League institution. His mother is a therapist. His father is a set supervisor on film sets and has worked on several Spike Lee movies.

Paul Simon traveled to South Africa in an attempt of embracing the culture and feeling in the most comfortable environment for recording the album.

Ezra Koenig plays the main character, Walcott, who has to go to Cape Cod to tell the mayor that vampires are coming.

But is it "pretense" if someone from a privileged background openly wears that fact on his sleeve? That seems like the opposite of pretense to me.

And frankly, this sounds sort of pretentious:

And this just sounds goofy:

Icelandic 7-piece Seabear has announced the release of their anticipated sophomore album, We Built a Fire, in March 2010 on Morr Music. The band will be making their US touring debut behind the album’s release, as well as performing several shows and parties at this year’s SXSW.

Defying its humble beginnings as the lo-fi solo project of Icelandic singer/multi-instrumentalist Sindri Már Sigfússon, Seabear has morphed into a rambling experimental/indie/folk septet. Sigfússon (also known as Sin Fang Bous – dubbed the “Icelandic Beck” by David Fricke of Rolling Stone on his recent US tour with Múm) was joined by the rest of the band for the making of We Built A Fire, the followup to their debut, 2007’s The Ghost That Carried Us Away.

this is very nice, I heard it twice today and it I still don't really know why I like it. It's worth to listen through proper headphones.

Not sure if there's anyone else here that likes Peter Gabriel, but here's his newest record. I'm a fan, and will listen to everything he puts out at least once. This is an orchestral covers record with him singing. Like I said over in the NP thread, I really like the version of "Flume", and several other songs take on a decidedly different mood with strings or piano accompaniment. "Heroes" is probably the weakest on the record, which leads to me to wonder why he put it at the head of the record--other than the fact that everyone knows that song.

There is supposed to be a PG covers record coming out later this year with the above artists covering PG, entitled "I'll Scratch Yours". Interesting.

I think this one is actually their first one in a way. I remember this bootlegish thing from last year which was just unlistenable because of the sound quality...

That was probably the tour LP that was limited to 300 copies that made its rounds last year.

This is actually like their 6th or 7th album they've put out. They're not a new band. They've been around since the early 90s, and disbanded, and then got back together.
