Yeah, I'm planning on it. Just trying to do my part for the Haitian Benefit - and a kick ass show to boot!

Right on, I'll be there. Probably grab a Whiskey or a Pint beforehand at O'Shea's, if interested.

Has anybody seen Monotonix? Interested to see if they really bring it or is it some novelty act.

we'll be there around 10:30, so probably just meet you at Respectables.

the guys in Torche seem to think Monotonix are "the best band ever", so we'll see.

New video for "Swim". Fucking great.

http://pitchfork.com/tv/#/musicvideo/39 ... wim-kanine

Great show last night. SB sounded ace. Monotonix were fucking INSANE, but 2 songs in the singer fucked up his knee really bad, so they stopped the show and sent him on his way in an ambulance. Hope he's ok.

he broke his leg...

btw, is that you in the front with the flannel?

http://blogs.browardpalmbeach.com/crossfade/2010/01/monotonix_singer_injured_west_palm_beach_florida/285880/

Quote:
The problem with being a performer known for exaggeration and extreme physical antics is, when something seriously goes wrong, nobody believes it at first. And so it went last night that when Monotonix frontman Ami Shalev called for a doctor barely 15 minutes into his band's headlining set, he was, at first, relentlessly heckled.

He had started the show in relatively fine form. (It must have helped that he slept, prostrate and tucked under a blanket blanket, on a bench through all of Surfer Blood's set, and then consumed two cans of Monster Energy Drink. Off went his and drummer Haggai Fershtman's shirts, and they began the show with a sweaty, hairy ballet after Shalev parted the crowd like Moses. Fershtman lay on his back, crab style, as Shalev doused him with bystanders' drinks, then took a running leap to land with the two locked in gymnastic poses.

At least half of the crowd who remained at this point (most of the dancing girls had cleared out after Surfer Blood), seemed completely unfamiliar with the band at set's beginning. They consequently lost it, and as Fershtman's drum kit got pushed into the middle of the crowd, a minor pit opened around him. Shalev managed to crowd surf, despite lacking the real critical mass of people for that sort of thing, and even soon forced a particularly enthusiastic chick to do so as well, pushing her aloft himself.

The problem is, this show being in the northern reaches of "South Florida," there were, of course, the requisite random drunks and muscle heads in the crowd. And a little "moshing" always gets them riled up. So somewhere in about the fourth song -- I believe it was the particularly rousing "Ride" -- the barflies went apeshit. It's unclear exactly what happened (I was busy running towards a wall for safety), but at one point, a large guy had managed to climb atop Shalev's shoulders, even as the singer signaled for him to get off. And that's when the music stopped, abruptly.

"I think we finally managed to make history," Shalev said. The crowd cheered, figuring it would be an announcement about the band's debut appearance south of Orlando.

"After more than 700 shows, I think I finally broke my leg," he continued.

More cheering. This was part of the stunt, right?

"Is there a doctor or paramedic?" he asked.

"Suck it up!" Someone yelled.

"Pussy!" Another heckler cried.

But Shalev was obivously in pain. "Fuck you!" he yelled, wincing and grabbing his thigh. "What I need is a doctor or a paramedic, or a wheelchair. Or just a chair." He repeated the request again at least twice.

Confusion then ensued as, yes, there was a doctor or paramedic in the house, who ran to tend to him. A massive bag of ice was produced from behind the bar, and helpers produced an Ace bandage.

Shalev, though, seemed to want to continue the show from a chair, insisting to his handlers and bandmates he could just ice it down. That seemed highly unlikely once the paramedics arrived with a stretcher. Shalev refused to leave on it, but didn't get up either. Nobody from the venue bothered to announce what was going on, instead sending a DJ to the booth to play indie rock as a few people lingered, trying to dance.

Eventually, most of the crowd trickled out. (Some actually demanded refunds. Really? Enjoy your extra $7 or $10, assholes). It was an anticlimactic, deeply disappointing end to what should have been the band's triumphant introduction to South Florida.

Monotonix is scheduled to finish up the last shows of its January tour run through the end of this weekend, and is supposed to play the 40 Watt in Athens, Georgia tonight. It remains unclear whether the band will be able to do so or not. We'll post more updates as we get them.

Haha, awesome--figured it was you. That sucks about the leg though. With a band like that with only minor exposure, losing tour time means losing $.

Pitchfork has picked up the story from the events at the Hospital.

http://pitchfork.com/news/37734-monotonix-frontman-breaks-leg-during-show-impresses-hospital-staff/

That shit was Crazy for the first 10 minutes or so. Wish I could have seen their entire set, but understandably he couldn't continue.

Sold out show last night in London...

Surfer Blood @ Hoxton Bar and Kitchen, London

http://www.gigwise.com/reviews/live/544 ... hen-London

“Sorry, we forgot to play a song. We actually just made a video for this one too.” says Surfer Blood lead singer JP Pitts seconds before he launches into 'Swim (To Reach The End)'. The fact a band can forget to play their best known song shows what a wealth of other great songs they have, a statement certainly true going by this performance.

Looking precociously young Surfer Blood take to the stage in front of an audience literally queuing out of the door to catch a glimpse of them. Watched on by a star studded crowd including fellow Sunshine state band The Drums (making this gig officially hype squared) the band immediately launch into a double header of 'Twin Peaks' and 'Take It Easy'. Their sound is similar in places to their début album 'Astro Coast' but eschews some of the gentler intricacies of the recording for bellowing and lots of noise. Tonight this causes Pitts vocals to become a little wayward, regularly flitting in and out of tune. Generally this doesn't affect the performance too much although over the course of a longer show it could soon grate. They have a great energy on stage however, with five members all putting their heart into things there is a gang mentality to Surfer Blood but it is big haired Marcos Marchesani who enthralls the most. When not switching between drums and keyboard he is dancing and hyping the crowd up to great effect. Not technically listed as an official band member Surfer Blood would be well advised to make his loan a permanent transfer.

As they play 'Harmonix' and 'Floating Vibes' Surfer Bloods highs more than make up for their excusable flaws. Taking influence from Pavement, Pixies and the deft angles of Q And U Surfer Blood's songs sit on the fence between being bombastic and intellectual. Leaning more towards the former the band run the risk of becoming too round at the edges but when they highlight their unique attributes they soar. Catching that balance is surely all that stands between this band and their success.

I finally got around to playing this and I made it all the way through without stopping it nor have I deleted it yet. It's not bad, but I think I might have to prorate my opinion from the dale-o-scale. I kind of wish the singer didn't have that Shinny voice.
