I know we've got some loyal pressers on here so...

What's everyone's thoughts on the plastic and/or stainless steel versions?

This morning I broke my glass carafe again and I'm thinking its about time I learned my lesson and switched to something else

I don't mind springing for the SS version but they are quite a bit more than plastic

Double walled stainless. Totally worth it.

French press daily for life.

I don't drink coffee but use my french press for tea. It's great for green tea which needs room to brew.

Dunno, Shawn. I use my 64oz to make iced coffee.

Couldn't agree more. Just bite the bullet on this one. Time for SS.

We've got 2. Ss we inherited from wife's dad, and then a glass/plastic one. I haven't used the ss one because I'm a visual person with my coffee. Time is probably more important in some aspects but I can tell my coffees from the shades they take.

I have this one for one cup and I only bought it because there was no choice. I actually wanted the thing without steel but priority was to have a french press asap

Yeah I have the bigger version of that one and have never broken a carafe.

Thanks.

Friend of mine has a stainless steel french press that can then be used as a thermos, so you can make the coffee and then bring it to work or whatever. It makes good coffee and she loves the portability. Just something to think about if your work has shitty coffee.

I have one of these that's done daily duty for about 2 years:

but about a month ago, I went over to the dark side:

In spite of the governing opinions (which I shared), with a k-cup of extra bold like Coffee People's Jet Fuel, damn thing consistently makes a better cup of coffee, and the press has gone on the top shelf of the cupboard.

Yeah, I used to use a french press but have switched to a moka pot myself and love it and can't see ever going back.

Of course, for multiple guests, it is nice to still have a french press around to make larger batches. But, for my morning cup, as far as the combo of taste and ease of use, these little stovetop jobs really are pretty great.

Yeah, I had a French Press mug, which was awesome until I lost it temporarily and found it molded up beyond repair. I still need to look for another of those.

My wife is a tea-aholic, and she has a really cool travel mug with a built in teaball or french press mechanism.

How easy is that to use? A friend of mine scared me with multiple stories of blowing those up.

I've not had the slightest trouble. You just fill the bottom with water, scoop some coffee in the basket, screw it together and put it on the stove. I guess if you crank the stove too high and leave it sitting there unattended for a long time you could have a problem, but I don't really see how anyone would have trouble working one. I think your friend might be a moron.

Eventually you have to replace the gasket, but that's not exactly a difficult or expensive thing.

well, I still don't know how in particular, but I had a flatmate once who had one of these things exploding in the kitchen. I still have the coffee on the wall, it won't dissappear after painting it over and everything.
I think there was something with the gasket maybe. also I think this was quite dangerous for potentially taking a shower with at least boiling coffee...

Hard to perma-paint your walls with coffee using a french press.
