Timing is everything OPA.

Four Seasons in a Day & Night in NYC

1 When I'm With You 2:57 Best Coast
Fun rockin' opener. A band I have read about a lot and only heard transiently. I like the sound that sorta harkens back to the late 50's with a hard edge but not so scratchy as a garage band would be. Welcome to NYC. 8.0

2 Warm Transfers 2:20 The Intelligence
Do I hear slight Banks-ish (Interpol) voice here? This at first was a bit cheeky, but it has grown on me. I could go without the dissonant bridge, but my ears tend to adjust to those things in time. 6.75

3 Transit 2:48 The Lines
Can't seem to peg the similar artists here, but it sure sounds familiar. This gels with the NYC feel of the mix. I like it. Reminds me of a mix tape I made for walking around in Boston in the late 80's. Damn that guitar sound rings nostalgic. 7.5

4 Top Shelf 2:48 That Ghost
I really like this. Type of music I have been digging lately not too far removed from Desolation Wilderness (IMO) My favorite so far, which hits great timing 'cause I always put the slay tune at 4th or 5th position. 10.0

5 This Town 3:07 The June Brides
Nice. A throw back reminiscent of my beloved Go-Betweens. This will have me clawing in their back catalog. I should have used more early music on my mix. 8.25

6 Personality Candyspots 2:08 Marmosets
This is what my sister would bring home on vinyl after having been to some discotheque the night before and hearing this ala Flying Lizards for example. Artsy fun with a wink. Oh, hey there, across from the bar, is that Andy all dressed in a silver suit? He's digging this tune too. 9.0

7 No Sugar 4:05 Pterodactyl
Great opening. Shoot the drummer he's blowing a good drone song. There's genius in this, but all in the background. Too bad. 3.5

8 My Intention 3:53 Ape School
What a save! I hear Big Country in the chorus. This brings in a more serious side lyrically on the mix. Really great song. I love those chiming strings. The drums on this much more understated but marching the song forward. Quickly becoming my favorite on the mix. 9.5

9 Love Goes Down The Drain 2:41 The Monochrome Set
Another fun song. Yet another kick back to the 70/80's punk club rock. Midnight is approaching and the whiskey haze is setting in and the build up of empty plastic cups covering the floor are getting kicked around from the rush to and fro to the bar. Who's on next? 8.25

10 It's So Strange 2:29 Blood On The Wall
Shit I must have fallen down 'cause I can smell the ferment of the floor coming off my left shoulder.
Great ramshackle. 8.0

11 Good Things 3:34 GoGoGo Airheart
Ok I need water. This is not doing it. Bad karaoke of a song I never heard. Where's the bathroom? 2.5

12 G.R.F. 4:38 The Apes
Granted things are spinning, but this is speeding it up. That voice, not for me. NYC definitely gets drunker than I do. Chris man how much longer until the bars close? I'm hurting here. 3.0

13 Follow You 3:11 Future Islands
Ssspheew! Now I'm coming down. Much better. This is quirky but good. Seems like he's a bit of a character on stage. Really enjoying this. 7.875

14 Fire 2:31 The Sandwitches
Good follow up. More fun with retro like Best Coast but sways easier. I can wind down like this. Shimmy shimmy shake. Very Nice. 8.0

15 Fifi F. 3:21 Les Georges Leningrad
Chris, where'd you go man? Don't leave me here, this town has got some weirdoes. That song is a bit artsy trying too hard but not making it, not pulling me in. Not to worry its been a great stroll so far, and my high is settled to a mere fading buzz. I'm easy like a Sunday morning now. 4.00

16 Don't Be A Jerk, Johnny 4:03 The Drums
Way to finish. I almost put a Drums tune on your mix. I like this. Its poppiness is pure pleasure that hits that teenage funny bone. Let's roll after this and grab a bite on the way home. 9.0

I have been listening quite a bit to this over the last few weeks. I meant to get a review in sooner but I had 2 unexpected trips in the last 2 weeks. This mix does a couple things for me that I like. For one, it brings in some older bands that I would most likely never come across. I always love hearing from the treasured past. Secondly, it pushes the envelope on edgier bands that are a little out of my comfort zone. Well, now I find some bands are right there in my zone. Overall it fits the NYC theme well. As you can see my reviews naturally digressed into an overly drunk evening setting on urban ground. Well done OPA! A pleasurable listen, and I look forward to hearing more of your recs in the future. 8.75

Glad you liked it. We have similar tastes so it worked out perfectly. Perhaps, we'll do this again at the end of the year.

Ha! I was gonna pull everything out to a 3rd decimal point for laughs, but thought one would be funnier.

Chris, is that a recent Les Georges Leningrad song? I haven't paid attention to them in like 5 years.

I do remember putting a song or two of theirs on mixes to be intentionally abrasive. I did like the songs though.

No, it's from their 2004 album, Sur les Traces de Black Eskimo.

Ah ok, that's the one I have and the only one I was aware of. But like I said, I haven't paid any attention in 5 years.

Due to seafoam's theme request, I went back and tried to find songs that would be perfect for walking down the streets of NYC while listening to your mp3 and Les Georges Leningrad was one of them. I initially planned to include "Sponsorships", which IMO is LGL's best song, but last minute I went with Fifi F.

no, but she tweets about recording stuff from time to time, so i'm thinking we'll see it at some point this year.
