Kinda rushed right now, so if this is already upped earlier in the thread, disregard.

Like the earlier American recordings, excellent recording/SQ.. As for the performance, J. R. is exhausted, physically and emotionally. Certainly worthy as the last session, but this not easy to listen to for me.

I liked their release Science for Sleeping. I've only listened to a few tracks of this so far and I like it, though the dude's vocals do drive me crazy at times.

Feeeeeeeeeelin' this right now. Reminds me of Cocteau Twins in parts.

The Depreciation Guild – Spirit Youth - 2010

Image

While you might know Kurt Feldman and Christoph Hochheim best for their work in The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, they are also members of the dream-pop trio The Depreciation Guild. In fact, they founded the band almost two years prior to the Pains’ formation. Now that you know this, let’s talk about The Depreciation Guild’s forthcoming second LP.

Available in your standard formats, as well as limited vinyl edition, starting May 18th through Kanine Records, Spirit Youth will look to embody the band’s “very own blend of 8-bit beats, clanging chords, and heady hook.” It will also contain disembodied voices and distorted guitars.

But don’t call it shoe gaze. “This record is heavy but it’s not very shoegaze,” explained drummer Kurt Feldman in a press release. “The influence is there, but if you hear an actual ’shoegaze record’, it doesn’t sound like us at all.” Please remind friends of this as well, as we don’t want to start any awkward situations during the band’s upcoming U.S. tour with Serena-Maneesh.

Gunslingers - Mainfest Zero

Image

Aquarius Records: Now this is what we're talkin' about. The return of France's Gunslingers, not too long after their amazing No More Invention album and the cd release of frontman Gregory Raimo's equally awesome solo endeavor as GR & Full-Blown Expansion. How does one go about describing a band like this? If you had to simplify things, you might call them a psychedelic punk band with krauty inclinations. It is also interesting to note that the rhythm section is comprised of dudes from black metal behemoths Diamatregon and weirdo occultic post rockers Aluk Todolo, not that this sounds anything like either. Gunslingers possess plenty of what we all know and love - crazy psych-surf riffing, a frantic rhythm section that manages to be both tight and sort of drunk sounding, and GR's unhinged vocals, which we accurately described as a cross between Johnny Rotten and Mark E. Smith, or better yet, the Trashmen's singer on the infamous "Surfing Bird". But the truth is, Gunslingers don't fit so easily into any categories. They are a crazy sounding bunch, capable of whipping up songs that are frenzied and totally demented, but also catchy and fun. And unlike many bands attempting this type of thing, Gunslingers avoid falling into the "retro" category, sounding, if anything, more like the true extension of the wild sounds of the late '60s/early '70s. So if this band HAD existed 40 years ago, you wouldn't be too surprised, but Gunslingers sound so self-aware that they seem to exist out of time, a quality we always appreciate.
The band kicks in right away with "The Spectre's Sinister Commandment," a firebreathing number that lurches forward menacingly with awesome sounding bass, melodic riffing, and some ride heavy drumming as GR's crazed vocals will make you wonder what the hell is going on in France these days. Without really letting up, Gunslingers go right into their strange world once again with "Coupe-George", a dense hurricane of fucked up biker psych mayhem heavy on the treble. "Stub Of Fortune" is another monster with super distorted guitars that seem to recall SST's glory days, all twisted, atonal, and jagged but strangely melodic at the same time. The album ends on a sort of upbeat note with the winding riffage of "Condor's Radiant Spawn", with the drums providing a super tight bounce that will make you feel like your heart will explode at any second. In a good way, of course.
Manifesto Zero is another highly welcome entry from a band we simply can't get enough of, which is why some of us will be heading down to the Hemlock tonight to check this shit out in the flesh if we can get done with the list in time! (That's right, they're on a US tour right now, go see 'em!!)

Thanks for the sample. They definitely sound like they're careening out of control on that tune. Will check this out and I'm sure they'd be incredible to see live unless they somehow keep their cool up on stage to contrast the caterwauling.

Rads might dig this too??

Daedelus - Righteous Fists of Harmony - 2010

Image

In this release for Flying Lotus’ up-and-coming label Brainfeeder,
Daedelus presents a soundtrack-of-sorts to the Boxer Rebellion. What,
you ask, could make such ancient history an inspiration for modern
electronics? Well, Daedelus has found a strange relevance to our
modern malady in these epic events of long ago…

After seventy years of China’s opium-related subjugation by Queen
Victoria and her allies, a force of resistance fighters — termed
“Boxers” by the British — rose to the challenge in 1898. Calling
themselves “The Righteous Fists of Harmony,” this secret society of
martial artists felt they held magical powers: they believed
themselves bulletproof, able to fly, and capable of raising the dead
(who would then fight alongside them). And so began the brief Boxer
Rebellion; three years later 100,000 Boxers had fallen, their magic
helpless against the cutting-edge machinery of war. The British
prevailed only to face ultimate defeat, as their empire rapidly
declined.

Daedelus endeavors to compose a requiem for the end — of beliefs, of
lives, and of an era. This elegy for a bygone battle sheds light on
our own contemporary conundrum: will our faith in modernity be our
downfall? Are we blinded by this age of wonders, doomed to be
destroyed by our ingenious inventions? Although Daedelus’ music has
always juxtaposed organic and electronic elements, they war as never
before on “Righteous Fists of Harmony,” a portrait of a tumultuous era
that came crashing to a close.

DAEDELUS – “Righteous Fists of Harmony” Tracklist:
BF006
23 MARCH 2010
Heavy Weight Vinyl / Digital

1. An Armada Approaches
2. Tidal Waves Uprising
3. The Open Hand Avows
4. Order Of The Golden Dawn (featuring Laura Darling)
5. The Finishing of a Thing
6. Succumbing To (featuring Kid A)
7. Stampede Me (with Amir Yaghmai)

Just getting around to this, and man is it good.

The Souljazz Orchestra picks up where the golden age of soulful music left off: they expand upon the rough and raw grooves of the 1960s and 1970s by taking on an eclectic, genre-bending approach, enriched by musical traditions stemming from both sides of the Atlantic. The resulting sound is enthralling and unique: a potent mixture of funk, soul, jazz, afro and latin rhythms, supported by an arsenal of dusty vintage keyboards and driven by powerful horn-drenched melodies.

The orchestra was founded in 2002, when a group of young, like-minded musicians started meeting up regularly at some of the hipper downtown clubs in Ottawa. Some had played in jazz combos, others in rhythm & blues bands, others still in African or Latin ensembles. They began making plans to form a new collective that would combine their various musical interests with their particular world view and the Souljazz Orchestra was soon born.

The multi-cultural Canadian ensemble has since had the chance to collaborate with such legendary figures as Jamaican reggae singer Horace Andy, Rwandan/Burundian guitarist Mighty Popo, as well as Fela Kuti alumni Dele Sosimi and Mabinuori Kayode Idowu. They have played hundreds of concerts across North America and Europe, sharing the stage with the likes of Femi Kuti, Etta James, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Érik Truffaz, Joshua Redman and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.

The band broke through in 2006 with their storming afrobeat classic, “Mista President”, a DJ staple since its release. Their accompanying record, Freedom No Go Die on Toronto’s Do Right! imprint, was released in September of 2006, also to critical acclaim. Tracks from the album have been featured on a number of compilations and soundtracks, alongside such heavyweights as Amy Winehouse, Radiohead, Common, Quantic and K-os. The listeners of Gilles Peterson’s BBC radio show voted “Mista President” as one of their top 10 of the year.

Manifesto, the group’s follow-up album, also on Do Right!, was released in 2008 and hailed as a modern classic: “Top album of the year” claimed Kalcha of Vibrations Magazine, “Definitely a marquee album, ” enthused CHARTattack Magazine, “Easily one of the funkiest groups in the contemporary Afro Funk underground,” said Dusty Groove.

In February 2010, the Souljazz Orchestra is releasing its first all-acoustic afro-jazz album, Rising Sun, on the London-based Strut label. On this new set, Souljazz stays true to its roots in soul and afro rhythms, but explores fresh directions in jazz, creating deep, improvisational big-band music with a heavy-driving, dancefloor-conscious edge. Gilles Peterson has already called Rising Sun the group’s best yet, as well as one of the year’s top albums.

The Souljazz Orchestra will be releasing its first all-acoustic afrojazz album, entitled Rising Sun, on Strut Records, a label experiencing a good amount of buzz with its recent releases from Mulatu Astatke & The Heliocentrics, Grandmaster Flash, Tony Allen & Jimi Tenor, as well as with its slew of top-notch reissues of historical dance music from around the world. While the Souljazz Orchestra stays true to its roots in soul and afro rhythms, on this new release they take a much jazzier approach, creating spiritually-charged, improv-heavy big-band music reminiscent of Salah Ragab, Pharoah Sanders, or Sun Ra, albeit with a heavy-driving, dancefloor-conscious edge.

don't think this was posted yet. some blog gave a RIYL of Vampire Weekend and Akron Family, so of course that got me interested.

Image

It could be that our wind-chapped ears are just dying for a little warmth and sunshine, but the tropical melodies of Fantasy Memorial is exactly what we desire near the end of a dark winter. Calling to mind the mashed-up tribal and electronic pastiche of Ruby Suns, Brooklyn band Dinosaur Feathers’ debut is an impressive collection of musical and global influences. Songs weave in elements of African rhythm and vocal chants with Latin Tropicalia melodies and acoustic guitar over beats that waltz, rattle, and shake away the winter blues.

What sounds like a full choir of noisemakers on these recordings is primarily the work of Greg Sullo, Derek Zimmerman, and Ryan Michael Kiley, plus a drum machine and a small cast of other musicians. The album opens with the sound of tropical bird croons and leaps right into the sunny “I Ni Sogoma” with a literal “whoooaaaa!” Lush, ‘60s-style vocal harmonies sway throughout many of the tracks that follow, most notably on the lovely “Holy Moses.” “Vendela Vida” recalls the dark Latin grooves of Black Heart Procession’s Amore del Tropico while quirky pop numbers like “Family Waves” sound like Vampire Weekend (and frankly beat the pants off much of the material on that band’s latest effort, Contra). Then there’s the dreamlike epic “Sleeping In,” which, at just over six minutes long, lulls the listener into tranquil submission at the album’s midpoint.

Dinosaur Feathers have crafted a layer cake of sweet vocal harmonies, electronic beats, and global grooves that are awash with joy — and joy is a universal sound which makes Fantasy Memorial instantly familiar and enjoyable in spite of its eclectic elements.
