Is Maker's Mark supposed to be an irish? Why does that keep coming up in here. Haven't had it in years...thought it was okay.

Jameson and Bushmills are great for a booze in their price range. If you're looking for something similar, Todd, I'd stick with Irish Whiskeys for a while and work your way into blended Scotch.

bourbons, tennesee whiskeys, and canadians are all lower on the scale. Rye is pretty iffy as well, but when it's done right, it's pretty great.

Makers is a kentucky bourbon.

I guess it kind of did for bourbon what starbucks did for coffee, although that's not a great analogy.

Starbucks:Folgers doesn't equal Makers:Jack or Jim

Although they did spur both distilleries to get into smaller more expensively crafted bourbon, so in that way the analogy holds up because they're somewhat responsible for raising awareness.

I think maybe people recommended it because they're lushes who like a lot of whiskey/bourbon/irish whiskey/scotch...

I mean, of any family of liquor, it's the one that scratches my itch hardest, way more than gin, vodka, rum, tequila etc... all of which I enjoy. But I will never ever let myself run out of some kind of whiskey.

Makers is decent, but its success is probably more about the bottle than the liquor inside.

Glenlivet 12 is my choice, and for me, about as expensive as I'll get. Maybe when I'm rich, I'll upgrade.

Anyone had Paddy's?
Image

Had a local liquor store offer to order me some up at $35 a bottle.
How does it stack up against the others?

I've had it, i wouldn't buy it.

It's not as complex as other irish whiskeys, not alot going on in the nose or in the aftertaste.

There are cheaper and more delicious ways to get drunk. Although, maybe you'd like it.

I think you should try the MacAllan 12, it's like $42 at our local joint, but maybe try it at a gig.

The Lucky Bomb

Two parts Jameson
One part peach schnapps
One part cranberry juice
Drop that mufugger in a glass of Red Bull

Seriously, Todd if you like Irish Whiskey, you should try some Redbreast. I'm lobbying hard here, but it's clearly the best Irish Whiskey at its price point.

There's a ton of great affordable scotches, american, canadian, and japanese (really good ones) at decent price points. All deserving of recommendations. But at the 40 dollar range, you won't find a better IRISH whiskey.

But since this thread has turned into a general whiskey rec thread, there isn't a finer whiskey from any country than this:

Ardbeg Uigeadail. Unfuckwitable.

Bought a liter bottle of it in Duty Free the other day when I landed here in KL, more because the choices were thin than how crazy I am about it- Maker's, Jim Beam, or Jack- easy decision. And it really is pretty good.

*edit- and yeh, that Ardbeg is fine shit.

3 years ago I would have rated these:
Maker's
Beam

Jack.

Now I prefer Ol No. 7

It's always been JD for me. The first sip of a double with coke literally gives me chills, like the gentle caress of a silk whore.

well, i recently decided i wanted this to be the summer of Old Fashioned's for me (thanks Mad Men season 3). so i went out and bought supplies last week. i am using this rye:

Image

i'm open for suggestions on how to make an OF as i see 9 million different "authentic recipes" scattered on the internets - each claiming to be the real deal. so far i've only tried muddling a sugar cube with a few dashes of angostura, along with an orange slice and a cherry. the results were a bit to sweet for my liking.

since the weather has turned cooler here the past few days, i've made Manhattan's the last few nights and i think i'm pretty set for those. the wildcard, it turns out, is the cherry. kind of extravagant (had to order from amazon), but these made a TON of difference from those nasty bright red abominations:

Image

holy shit these things are GOOD. drizzle a little of the juice they are sitting in into the drink as well...nice. i haven't had a chance to try this with the OF, so maybe that will be the difference there too.

Agreed. Todd seems more inclined to trust his buddy than us which I guess I can't blame him for. In this case, its the wrong move though.

I just bought another bottle yesterday in part due to this thread. I was tempted by the Ardbeg Uigeadail on a nearby shelf but I saved that for another day.

I will search some Readbreast out.
I am all for it and appreciate the rec! I am also becoming disinclined to get that Paddy's.

Don't think that I don't listen..

That is pretty top notch

And whoever got charged $55 for a shot of Glenlivet 18 got raped. Most I've paid for in a bar is $24. haha

Agreed, but considering billyg lives in a hip part of L.A., allowing for inflated cost of living somewhere much cooler than where you live, I think you might have gotten raped just as much or more. Sure, you could have bought two for what he paid for one, but when the buzz wears off, you're still in virginia, and he's browsing amoeba.
