See this blog for links to a handful of early records: http://zzyrus.blogspot.com/2009/06/bert-jansch.html

I just gave a listen to his self-titled debut, and am now extra excited that the Neil Young show is opening with Bert Jansch!! In 8 sleeps.

I see they have "Jack Orion." That is the one I would have recommended.

Jeff Goldblum in a mock-commercial pitching a pill called Waitmate. It's a sleeping pill that lasts as long as the dosage allows therefore bypassing the "wait" and sleeping until the event of your desire, like Neil Young in Albany, NY. It's from one of my favorite TV shows, Tim & Eric's Awesome Show Great Job!

Report: Being in Montreal has been great for seeing tours that skip over it, for its proximity to Albany, Saratoga, etc. But my god is Albany a rough place. Never had good luck in that town, and last night the reasoning was the crowd. I find it a bit crazy that I share my heroes with some of loudest people on the planet. They virtually drowned out Bert Jansch, and predictably hooted their way through Neil's set. You can tell Neil doesn't know what to say about it, but somehow was able to put it accurately by responding to song requests with "It's all just one song" (which it was: e.g. "Like An Inca" teased in one of the new numbers, and several subtly repeated song themes), and "I don't know where these songs come from, I think it's you". Arriving at the Palace Theatre, we headed straight to merch to see one t-shirt proclaiming "I said solo, they said acoustic". And so the set for the night was mapped out. Three classics on acoustic to start, followed by several new songs and more classics, on Old Black, White Gretsch, 1 on upright piano, 1 on painted grand piano, 1 on pump organ. The new material was actually pretty great – very literal lyrics and simple guitar vamp, as seems to be characteristic of Neil's latest stuff, "64 and there's so much more" – all drenched in slow flange distortion that actually reminded me a bit of Spacemen 3 (meets Dead Man sdtrk). In fact, all the electric songs shared the same psychedelic wash, in addition to his patent crunch, and I loved it. I loved the show sonically, as above and that he sounded vocally even better than the last few times, for the oddball introduction of new material, for the superior performances of some of the timeless classics, languid and leaden without the confines of a backing band. Great performances of "Ohio" and "Cortez", though if I have one criticism, it would again be the repetition of many mainstay songs, when he could play anything. This night, we got our obscurity fill from the new material. I'll be interested to see if the setlist fluctuates much through the tour... (*setlist spoiler below*). It was a great show as always, and puzzling as always. How puzzling seems to be so perfectly Neil.

seriously. i read a quick review that said he was triggering 3 different keyboard stations on stage, but i was a bit too far to see. whatever the case, totally cool augmentation of his tone, and very interesting (if not ideal and newfangled) performance format.

there's a torrent here if anyone's registered with easytree? i'll have to retrieve my password tomorrow. if you grab it, please post it.

I was sitting no less than 5 to 10 ft from Neil at any point. It was surreal and I'm still processing it. It was a strange feeling considering I was used to seeing him and listening to him from afar. I wish I could go back tonight, but it's just too damn expensive.

JLS - the psychedelic wash wasn't as psychedelic for me (you may have been more stoned?), but I definitely noticed the guitar effects and thought they served the purpose of adding a tone to this unique solo performance. I even dug his new songs, especially "Leia".

Mojo - you're in for a treat.

Bert Jansch was great, but I could've just listened to him play the guitar and been fine with it. The Scot accent made it difficult to be fully engaged by his lyrics.

i hear what you're saying. i think the effects on his guitar, and ultimately the feedback he was using, was a bit more subdued than it could have been. i might not have conveyed that subtlety. i'm jealous of how close you were. i had the pleasure at one massey hall show, and it's not to be forgotten. glad you liked the new songs. i've been listening to the albany show quite a bit, and processing them. i like em all, and am really looking forward to a daniel lanois produced album (presumably of these songs).

So this is hypothetical, correct? Because that would be pretty cool. I don't see Neil going for it though considering his penchant to sonic perfection/control.

Concert was pristine and truly special. Hard to find the words to describe the performance and the venue, except that it was worth every penny. Despite wanting to go out afterwards on Broadway, I thought that would cheapen how my wife and I were feeling. Did Noshville next morning - pastrami and corned beef omelette w/ H&H bagels from NYC!!!

Best quote from that night. Crosswalk on Broadway behind two young 20something girls in mid-conversation:

Girl 1: "You're such a liar, you are too a racist!"
Girl 2: "I'm not a racist, I've got a color tv!"

Ben Keith has passed.

http://neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org ... -2010.html

On the full moon, the Thunder moon, the world lost one of the greatest musicians of all time. Ben was 73 years old the night he died on Broken Arrow Ranch in California, his happy home for the last years of his life. Ben played with Patsy Cline, Faron Young, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Ian Tyson and many other music greats. A great American, the quiet giant, he moved gently through the world, with kindness and grace.

My wife Pegi was lucky to share his last performance a few weeks back in San Francisco, where Ben was playing in her band, supporting her and lending his spirit to her every word as she sang her songs for us.

Of course, in Nashville Ben Keith is legendary, one of the last of the original country greats, the man behind the song. No one will ever fill his shoes. He has countless friends and admirers. They all miss him as much as I do. I will miss him every time I look to my side, remembering him, my brother and fellow traveler.

Thankfully, Ben's masterful playing can be seen and heard in two Johnathon Demme pictures: 'Heart of Gold' and 'Trunk Show,' as well as countless great recordings over the last 50 years. We are so fortunate to have these as memories and lasting documents of his greatness and grace. He started out on a homemade steel guitar he fashioned himself from a piece of wood and left over parts. He loved his music and his life and cherished his many friends and soul mates.

He leaves behind his wonderful daughter Heidi, and his grandchildren who he loved so much, DJ, Rachel, James, Meredith, Aubrey, Fletcher and Caroline.

May he rest in Peace.

Neil Young

All proceeds from the sale of special limited-edition Neil Young t-shirts will also aid those affected by the oil spill.
