It's been an odd year... traditional indie rock (and that traditional describes indie may be telling in itself) hasn't satisfied been real satisfying (Surfer Blood, Local Natives, Liars, National... all sound kinda ok for a spin or two and then get put away). I am hoping the Broken Social Scene restores the "rock" to my menu of delights.

My continuing addiction to ambient/experimental in all its guises continues... and the margins of club or dance music sometimes fail in their discoism (Caribou) or fill in the spaces with riddim' and surprise (Pantha du Prince, Four Tet)... but that's where my ear mostly is these days...

And the music that doesn't get noticed on obner... Erika Badu's new one reveals new things every listen... Christian Scott's nu-jazz Yesterday you Said Tomorrow is the best recording of the year to me...

1 for 2 there, Harry. Badu's album is a bit of a hit around here.

But I tend to agree with your point about indie (though I doubt Broken Social Scene will do anything except exacerbate the problem).

thanks Rads, even when I don't agree with you I usually agree with you. I did a search and saw Badu attached to you, Dalen, and Two Guns Don't... did I miss a thread where it was lauded? Her voice is so odd... rich and barely holding the pitch... but she sounds like the Lady Day of post-racial (not) Amerika...

agreed, but i find it strange that the even more middle of the road kind of indie rock, you know song music, is catching my ear this year more than any recently. stuff like radio dept, mynabirds, she and him, tindersticks, morning benders, besnards, even vampire weekend, are typically not things i'd get that excited about, but there seems to be a glut of good releases in this group.

i have at one time or another, or continuously, been infatuated with these records:

Joanna Newsom
Roky Erickson with Okkervil River
The Radio Dept.
Eluvium
Solex vs. Cristina Martinez vs. Jon Spencer "Amsterdam Showdown, King Street Throwdown" - This is a sleeper around here, though people should take notice. Solex's return after 6 quiet years is deeper than almost anything she put out before, of equal quality, all the while managing to sound fresh and distinctly, uniquely like the turn of the millenium.

There have definitely been a good year for new music so far. But I kind of just attributed that to the fact that I've been getting high all the time lately.

Agreed with above sentiments. Tons of quality records this year, but I keep getting caught up with older stuff.

Normally, I'd be all over the new National and BSS, but I'm really not moved by what I've heard.

Some bands who have put out 2010 releases that have been catching my ear:

Hammock
Slow Six
Nels Cline
Joanna Newsom
Bonnie Prince Billy
The Water (local Bmore band)
Thee Silver Mt. Zion
Scuba
Sandra McCraken
Jose James & Jef Neve
Glossary
DBT
Dawn Landes
David Byrne + Fatboy Slim
Ben Sollee + Daniel Martin Moore
Beach House
Madlib
The Whigs

Nothing much surprising yet and I still haven't heard the new National, Black Keys or Hold Steady, because I'm waiting until I actually buy them, but I'm pretty sure they'll be in that list once I do.
