Formed in Athens in '96. Band members live in Athens and North Alabama.

Cooley and Patterson are both FROM the Shoals area, though. And Alabama informs a lot more of their music (Three Great Alabama Icons, Wallace, etc etc)

When Isbell was in the band, being from Crane Hill, I think you can argue it either way :P

This provides a great list. Who knew Dio and Jon Spencer were from NH.

This takes where the people are from. So, technically MD could claim Zappa and Byrne since they were both born in Baltimore.

Alaska had Anatomy of a Ghost, who then moved down to Portland and became Portugal the Man, so maybe that counts for Alaska

I'm finding this more frustrating than helpful. It'd be great if they'd list more than just their 3 top picks, because if I'm not on board with any of those, I'm back to looking up stuff on my own.

Edit: While I disagree with a whole lot of their choices, they NAILED Ohio.

WOAH. POD, what the fuck man? :nono:
(off the top of my head) Beach Boys, Black Flag, Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, Creedence, Descendents, Doors, Grateful Dead, No Age

Calm down, it's just a place holder. I was listening to the new one yesterday, it's solid. You ever see them live? I could have done way worse from California.

Like Beefheart.

I love Slipknot. Unashamedly.

And as far as The Evens... I never got into any of the artists you mentioned there. Some of them I've tried and nothing stuck (especially Fugazi), others I've only heard very limited material from but it wasn't enough to spurn me to check them out further. And a couple I've never even heard of before (High Black Chairs, Nation of Ulysses). However, both of The Evens albums are cds that I can just put on and feel like there is something right with the world. I'm a sucker for good male/female harmonies and The Evens mix in satisfying acoustic guitars.

Duke Ellington is also from DC.

I still had to go with Fugazi, though.

Several of these are naturally very difficult. I've changed Ohio three times so far and California twice. (Settled on Beefheart, though, so suck it, POD.) New York was surprisingly easy, not that there aren't tons of other great choices (Talking Heads would be my 2nd choice, probably).

Hey, you wanna like Beefheart, go ahead. I can't stand his music personally. And I like The Deftones, so it stands for the moment, but it's such a big state, with so many important scenes over the years that it'll probably change.

In addition to all the ones stu mentioned, California can claim Tom Waits, The Minutemen, Charles Mingus, Pavement, Love, and Sly and the Family Stone.

In the case of bands, I consider the band to be from the place where they formed and started playing together. S&tFS started playing together in San Francisco.

By that logic, though, I'm not sure I can consider Television to be from Delaware. May have to change that, but I don't think I like my other choices.

Great call. Might have to re-evaluate my choice of Lips.

By-&-by, it's too bad Lee's dead. A collaboration with the Lips would have been glourious.

I like Pere Ubu, but for me it's hard to put any band in that slot other than Devo.
