Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers @ the Newport Casino (which is really a grass tennis court complex)
Louis CK @ the Newport Yachting Center (which is exactly what it sounds like)

Not exactly CBGBs during Reagan. I have gotten very old.

I can't think of a more painful way to spend an evening than with Steve Martin.

Louis, on the other hand, is awesome.

I saw Louis CK a year or two ago and he was fantastic. His new show premieres tonight, can't wait for that.

My next two shows:

Deer Tick @ Off Broadway 8/05
Dax Riggs @ Old Rock house 8/21

I'd go see both of those shows. A tennis court and a some freaking yachting center sounds pretty lame though.

Louis CK is hilarious. Best comic out there, period.

I'm still not sure what my next two shows will be. Got Sled Island for the next four days and there are a ton of bands to choose from.

After months of not much other than seeing a local band every once and a while, got a lot on my future plate....

Delta Spirit
"Free Tulsa"... basically a 2 day festival with a bunch of regional bands
Pixies
Tom Petty
then closing out the summer seeing The National in KC

yeah I'm not super duper looking forward to it, unless he reads some of his book to me. however, his backing band (Steep Canyon Rangers) are guys I went to college with, so I'm hoping for a pleasant sense of nostalgia.

Supposedly that Steve Martin show is pure music, no comedy... just bluegrass/banjo music. And, Martin is a helluva banjo player.

Chase, seriously... don't waste your money (unless your college buds are putting you on the list). Still, boring as fuck. I guess you'll be glad to know teh Rangers are the only saving grace.

The next show I will see is The Psychedelic Furs and I'll be paying some obscene ticket price as well.

Don't let this happen to you and learn from my dreadful fate - stay away from the women, they'll make you do stuff like this. Being dragged round to a tile warehouse on a Sunday morning is bad but it doesn't cost $50 per person unlike this farrago.

At least Drive By Truckers are scheduled for an appearance soon and I'll be getting revenge on Little Miss Delicate Ears.

42-year-old wife is psyched to see Best Coast at the Empty Bottle for $12.
I love her.

Just saw The Psychedelic Furs last night. It was $25 a head. Luckily i used to gig with the sax player and he called up with some guest list spots. It was a good show though, almost no talking or down time, a solid hour of tight playing and then a 3 song encore. No small feat in the texas heat at their age. So if i was a mega fan and had paid, i'd feel satisfied. Shoot, I kind of felt bad being guest listed because they were really working for the money on stage.

I'm on the fence... pricey tickets in these parts.

I kind of lied, Iron Maiden is actually my next concert. My best friend invited me to see them in Chicago, but I'm basically just using it as an excuse to visit my hometown.

Last night: John Hiatt and Levon Helm @ Ravinia.
Hiatt was... Hiatt. Solid craftsman. Decent songs.
Levon, on the other hand, sounded amazing. He had a killer band playing with him and, when he sang, he sounded just like he did on all the early Band stuff. He looked genuinely happy to be on stage singing and playing drums. Highlight of the show (for me) was "Chest Fever". Disappointment was that Levon, himself, only sang about 1/3 of the time. Understandable, considering what he's been through, but disappointing nonetheless. Happily, he had other great singers in the band. Oh, and Hiatt sang "The Weight" as part of the encore.
