You might be on to something here- one listen to Chutes Too Narrow made me aggressively (and immediately) seek out something...anything... to listen to. Hell, I almost played an Ed Harcourt cd.

You guys have it all wrong. I like the Jack White argument and I will give him a solid #2 status behind The Shins. (The Strokes come in 3rd with maybe The Hives at a distant #4) The Shins seemed to make indie rock cool and something for people to aggressively seek out. They opened people's minds to see what else was out there and fine music that matters. Jack White (both the White Stripes and side bands) have really rocked a lot of people and hardly anyone doesn't get excited when one of their songs starts playing. The Hives had a really big impact on the garage scene even though they have waned in importance and popularity the last 4 years.

I'm guessing:

5. Candlebox
6. Kent
7. Graham Cousens
8. Stick Figure

Nah, it was really The Vines.

I couldn't name one Candlebox song and Stickfigure is pretty crappy. They were just good live because of Mike Mesaros on bass.

OHG i meant collective soul not candlebox. I had to go to your last.fm page to realize that. And looking over your page, I see that you've given paper airplane pilots 1,096 plays. Damn, that's probably more than Robotboy's mom.

It is sort of impressive that PAP has 4,000 plays total on last.fm and tj42 has 1,000 of them. Robotboy owes him a reach-a-round at a minimum.

tj42 also has 330 of the 368 Olde Style listens so if robotboy's hand gets tired maybe Spade Kitty can finish him off.

re: Radiohead - I don't think much of their 00 put is accessible. And do people consider them innovative because they did what Aphex Twin was doing a decade before, but they were doing it as a rock band?

I forgot to mention The Postal Service. I mean, how many less packages would UPS have shipped without them?

Most of the Spade Kitty stuff came from when I had my WTIM radio streaming thru Winamp and I had looped the entire catalog one entire weekend so people could come in and sample when they wanted. This was back when we had that Chicago concert in that hot as hell church attic chapel.

Edit: But I still like the PAP and Graham Cousins.

Hives would make the short list... if we all lived in Sweden.

Sub Pop put themselves back on the map with The Shins, Postal Service, and Iron & Wine, primarily. And I don't really see what that paved the way for other than one label's return to prominence/relevance. A lot of shit went on in the past decade, and only a small part of it fits into the safe, huggable indie template of those three bands.

Oh, you are assuming since they are from Sweden that they are wildly popular there. Wrong. The Hives are much more popular in Germany.
