Don't worry this isn't about modern portfolio theory.

I miss the days when radio was cool and on KROQ or WHFS you might hear a Bob Marley or Van Morrison tune right after the latest Janes Addiction song or Cure song. A new radio station was recently bragging that their playlist would be composed of 1000 songs compared to the typical 400 songs on most radio stations. I have a 100GB mp3 player with about 18K songs on it with just about every genre and continent represented. I was thinking it might be cool to listen to my mp3 player on random for a half hour or so, make a list of the songs it selects and upload them to YSI.

It would basically be "a random walk" through my collection. Maybe others could do the same. I'm only going to bother though if people would actually be interested in this and plan to download and listen. So let me know what you think.

I would upload it as individual files so you could keep whatever songs you liked. But in order to replicate the oldtime radio experience, I'd just label the mp3's "song 1", "song 2", etc so you wouldn't know what you're going to hear until you hear it.

After a day or so, when everyone's had a chance to dl and listen, I'd post the playlist (song title, artist, album it came from).

i might be down if i can figure out how to register with & upload to ysi fairly easily. i have 450gig worth of hd at home with currently 22k+ songs to random thru. more variety than any single radio station is what i like.

Didn't we do this with a Zen mix on the "other" board last year. Users submitted numbers that translated to albums and tracks?

that sounds like a good idea. and i'm sure i could make this something of a game trying to figure out what you've ysi'd.

i believe that was more i ching-based. and it was for an actual mix, not just putting your mp3 player on random. that was a pretty cool idea, though. we should do it again soon.

About the radio part of the initial post - that's the "Jack" format, & it's spreading like friggin' wildfire.

Radio is TERRIFIED of the iPod & online music listening.

Should be, too. Radio sucks. The online community doesn't.
