Dale, how/why you get a mix on magiska?

they sent me an email earlier today requesting to put some of my mixes up. supposedly they get bombarded with mixes, but dig the ones i put up on my site. a few of the folks from that site follow Jukeboxer. they have 24,000+ users a day, so I'm all for it. i was honored to say the least.

i've got some really cool guest mixes from some artists you might be familiar with coming up soon. :D

Pretty cool, Dale.

Grandaddy and Earlimart are two beautifully mopey bands that secretly just want to have fun. After years of releasing (usually) melancholy, inwardly looking albums, members of both groups recently decided to get together and record a whole new batch of songs that are surprisingly playful and full of hope. Sure, there are still moments of wistful heartache. But the new tracks on I Heart California, coming out July 13 under the collective band name Admiral Radley, are relatively breezy with a healthy sense of humor.

Admiral Radley features Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle and drummer Aaron Burtch along with Ariana Murray and Aaron Espinoza of Earlimart. Longtime friends, the four say they were a natural fit in the studio. "Recording started and sure enough, it was just as expected," says Lytle. "Loose and enjoyable, sometimes even hilarious and insane. Which is great!"

I Heart California opens with the jaunty title track, a wry, tongue-in-cheek homage to the band's home state, where middle-class drug addicts dye their hair with iced tea, get boob jobs and attend the symphony, all while staying perfectly tanned year-round. "The Thread," featuring Murray on lead vocals, is the album's loveliest and most sentimental track, as it details the simple pleasures of growing old with someone.

I Heart California takes its sharpest turn on "I'm All F***ed on Beer," a hard-driving but comical rock number with fuzzy guitars and filtered vocals screamed by a misanthropic drunk. The gorgeous "I Left U Cuz I Luft U" closes the album, with Lytle on lead vocals, telling the minor-key story of a man who flees a sinking relationship in the middle of the night because his heart can't take it anymore.

Grandaddy broke up in 2006, but frontman Lytle, the band's principal songwriter, has stayed busy, with last year's beautiful solo album, Yours Truly, The Commuter, and now with Admiral Radley. Longtime fans of his music should be comfortably sated with I Heart California, especially with the addition of Murray and Espinoza of Earlimart. Together, they've formed a perfect marriage of sound, style and substance.

I Heart California will be available here in its entirety until its official release on July 13. Let us know what you think of the music in the comments section below.

True Panther is incredibly excited to announce Magic Kids’ debut album Memphis. Recorded in the Memphis studio of Doug Easley over the course of several months, it is an attempt to re-frame the city, not as the home of musical eras long-gone, but a place where crumbling neighborhoods, hidden BBQ places, and closed-down roller rinks are all enveloped by a thick summer air, and a sense of MAGIC. What Magic Kids share with last century’s masters – Jeff Lynne, Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks – is a belief in the promise of the pop song; in the ability to take a tiny and simple melodic gem, a small moment of wide-eyed sincerity, and translate it into something that is bursting with life. The arrangements and colors hinted at with their singles on Goner and Fat Possum are in full bloom on the album. There are touches of late 80s Britpop, the Del-Phonics’ heartbreaking harmonies, ELO’s grandeur, and Belle & Sebastian’s intimacy. And MEMPHIS. Home to artists that range across genres, the music of the city is honest, robust and joyful; often made by iconoclastic, rebellious and larger than life musicians. This is the Memphis where Magic Kids were born, where Bennett, Al, Ben, Michael, and Will grew up playing in garage bands, hanging around Goner Records and listening to records. It’s also the city that houses the orchestra of musicians they called upon to realize the sound and ambitions planned for this new collection of songs. Memphis reminds us of some of the first exciting moments of becoming a lifelong music listener. Their music isn’t positive because of the difficulties of life, but in spite of them. They are close to our hearts because they believe that no matter what the circumstances are, deliberate hard work and ambition mixed with joyous honesty still make it possible to craft classic, beautiful, and eternal pop music.

I downloaded this earlier and it's pretty good, but the varying volume levels are driving me facking crazy. Is it supposed to sound like this?

They kind of remind me of the Smith Westerns, another band that'll be totally awesome if they can figure out what all those knobs on the mixing board are for.

Figured it was an "act quick" thing. The sound quality is absolutely horrible anyway. Album could sound promising, but it's hard to tell.

Just finished listening to Magic Kids. I like it. Kinda reminds me of Holiday in parts. I don't know if there are any other fans of stuff that March, Kindercore, Sarah, Cher Doll, and to a lesser extent Darla were putting out in the 90s but I'm hearing a lot of it in this new wave of bands these days. Light but not too lite, jangley and poppy but not overtly twee, small amounts of fuzz and larger amounts of fun.

anyway, there's not much Holiday on youtube but here ya go. this is off of Cafe Reggio from 1997 (SpinArt Records)

My friend J. is the drummer on that Holiday record. I like parts of it a lot.

I think I need to re-download The Suburbs with a newer link since the one I got sounded awful on headphones. Sounded ok, though. I actually like the Regine songs more than most of the other songs.

Arcade Fire is ok on first listen. There are maybe 3 really good songs, 3 ok ones and the rest is the usual them sound. I think City with No Children is a stand out. It maybe a grower but they never did it for me on previous attempts except for 2 or 3 songs per album.
