I guess that I'm going to see Bruce Hornsby in November.
Not the biggest fan in the world, but the guy is a helluva piano player. And, the wife is a Deadhead, so I'm sure that she'll dig whatever Dead stuff he pulls out of his (hat).

Besides, it's always nice to see live music whenever I can.

I'd go see him, he's usually got a crack band, especially the drummers (John Molo was a favorite. Obners should like that name). Right now he's using Sonny Emory.

Sonny has been playing drums since the age of 4. He started playing professionally with his father, Edward "Sonny" Emory, Jr., a saxophone player, at the age of 7 and hasn't stopped since. He matriculated at Georgia State University receiving a B.A. in jazz performance.

After graduating, he moved to Los Angeles to tour with Jean Luc-Ponty but that was only the beginning. Sonny played on several albums and CD's. There are too many to name here, but some of the most memorable ones were: The B-52's "Cosmic Thing", Eric Clapton/David Sanborn's "Lethal Weapon II Soundtrack", Earth, Wind and Fire's "Heritage CD", Paula Abdul's "You", Bobby Lyle's "Rhythm Stories", George Howard's "When Summer comes and Attitude Adjustment", Urban Knights "Urban Knights Project", Lee Ritenour's "Twist of Marley", Steely Dan's "Two Against Nature" and his own band's CD entitled "Hypnofunk featuring Sonny Emory".

Sonny has also had the opportunity to tour with such music greats as: Earth, Wind and Fire, Stanley Clark, Al Jarreau, Jonathon Butler, Bette Midler, Lee Ritenour, David Sanborn, Will Downing and Frankie Beverly and Maze and he looks forward to touring with Bruce, of course.

Sonny loves all genres of music and says, "This tour is going to be a blast because Bruce's music really lets a drummer stretch out and have fun!" Sonny's endorsements include: Yamaha drums, Zildjian cymbals and drumsticks, Shure microphones and Remo drumheads.

Let's see, in the last couple of years:
Steve Earle
Aimee Mann
Ringo Starr
Kasey Chambers
Bruce Hornsby
Steely Dan*
Bob Mould*
Los Lobos*

And, I think that's it.

*didn't actually make the show

I am trying to imagine all these performers on one-stage. Would prolly sound a lot like the Fabulosos Cadillacs performance I caught in Spain.

This is getting (even more) fucking embarrasing.
This morning I won tickets to:
Steely Dan
performing Aja in it's entirety.

This one actually was a phone-in win and not online. Of course, it helps that it was 5:45 a.m., when there aren't a lot of people listening.

Nice. I wonder if they are touring on that concept. My wife said she just got an email saying that they were touring soon.

Looks like I'm going to be out of town on the night of the Steely Dan show. Damn. All the shows that I REALLY want to see, I get screwed on.

I have a friend whose birthday is a couple of days earlier; I'm giving him the tickets and he's going with his son.

I would love to see that Steely Dan show. They were great in 06 w/ Michael McDonald opening (who also came out and sang backups on their encores)

Today I just won tickets to see John Mellencamp, as well as the new Dandy Warhols retrospective.

The show should be fun. He's got enough good songs throughout the last 30+ years or so to make for an entertaining show.

I think I'm the only Hoosier who has never seen Mellencamp live. Supposed to be a good show.

Expect a lot of new material. He's got a new one out that he seems pretty proud of.

Oh yeah, I've heard a couple of tracks from that one and they were very good. He recorded them in the hotel room where Robert Johnson recorded, or something like that. Did it in mono, with a single microphone. Some sort of throwback recording process or something. But yeah, the songs were done pretty bare-bones and they do sound very good.

Quote:
The first thing that grabs the listener about John Mellencamp's No Better Than This is its sound: mono -- recorded live to an Ampex 601 tape recorder circa 1955, with a single microphone without mixing or overdubs. It's warmth and presence are immediate and engulfing. Mellencamp and T-Bone Burnett cut the album while on tour supporting, Life Death Love and Freedom, Mellencamp's celebrated precursor. This album was cut in some very famous locales: First African Baptist Church in Savannah, GA (the first African American Christian church in North America), Sun Studios in Memphis, and in Room 414 of the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, TX, where Robert Johnson recorded "Stones in My Passway" in 1936. While Mellencamp's last album was celebrated for its wonderfully crafted songs, it nonetheless reflected Burnett's dictatorially heavy-handed production style. This set feels far more like the artist. The songs are rooted in country, rockabilly, folk, country-gospel, and an even rawer Midwestern rock--Mellencamp's brand. The band is equal parts his standard road group and Burnett's studio crew, but the latter plays more of a supporting role than a guiding one; this set, with its brilliantly pruned songwriting, is Mellencamp at his focused best.

The album's opener, "Save Some Time to Dream," is from the older, wiser songwriter who gave us "We Are the People," "Jackie Brown," "Human Wheels," and is a skeletal part two of "Your Life Is Now." These historic locales reflect the tunes somewhat -- especially the driving title track, "Coming Down the Road," and "Each Day of Sorrow" that come from, respectively, the rockabilly of Carl Perkins, early Elvis, and Johnny Burnette. "No One Cares About Me" is a pure Mellencamp lyric, but its sound is reminiscent of the Sun-era Johnny Cash. The spooky banjo of the minor-key blues that makes up "The West End" touches on the folk-blues Bob Dylan utilized on "The Ballad of Hollis Brown." "A Graceful Fall" is electric hillbilly blues. "Love at First Sight," with Mellencamp accompanied only by an acoustic guitar, is among the finest love songs he's ever written. "Don't Forget About Me" is a country ballad that acts as its mirror image and resonates deeply. He may be looking back at some earlier styles of music that influenced him, but these songs feel invigorated, unfettered; melodically and lyrically astute. He possesses an independent streak in abundance; he is making music only for himself now; as a result, he's in a league of his own. No Better Than This proves that good songs need very little to communicate instructive narratives and complex emotions, and that primitive recording methods are still sometimes the best ones. (The album is also available on vinyl.)

I did and, I got caught up in family stuff before I could respond. Speaking of family stuff... I finally did respond.
Thanks so much! You rule in many, many ways.
