ive listened to this three times since wednesday and it may actually be top 10 all time - something in the night is the only track id consider weak, the rest is pure emotion piss vinegar and some of the gravelliest forced vocals bruce has ever laid down

Holy Mother Fucking Happy Hannukah!

Quote:

When it comes to holiday season reissues, it's gonna be tough beating the redux of Bruce Springsteen's 1978 classic Darkness on the Edge of Town. It's a six-disc box set-- three CDs, three DVDs-- dubbed The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story and due out November 16 on Columbia.

On the audio side, there's a remastered version of the record, along with two discs filled with 21 previously unreleased songs that Springsteen says "could have/should have been released after Born to Run and before the collection of songs that Darkness on the Edge of Town became," according to a press release. (A legal battle with former manager Mike Appel famously delayed the recording of Darkness.) The unreleased songs include a rock version of epic ballad "Racing in the Street" and the original recordings of "Because the Night" and "Fire". The two CDs of unearthed material will also be sold on their own as The Promise. Over at Springsteen's website, you can hear the previously unreleased track "Save My Love".

Over on the visual side, we get the new 90-minute documentary The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town, which features previously unseen footage of Springsteen and the E Street Band from between 1976 and 1978 along with new interviews with all the principals behind the record. (It'll premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on September 14 and screen on HBO October 7.)

Also, there are two more DVDs worth of live footage, highlighted by a 26-track, high-quality bootleg of a Houston show from 1978. Assorted live tracks from the period are also included, as well as a 2009 performance of the entire album at Asbury Park's Paramount Theater.

There's an 80-page booklet with pages from Springsteen's notebook as well as a new essay from the singer, too.

Anyone who bought the remarkable, 10.0-earning Born to Run reissue in 2005 knows Bruce takes his reissues seriously, and this Darkness revisit looks to be just as extensive. The box set's staggering tracklist is below:

CD1: Darkness on the Edge of Town (Remastered):

01 Badlands
02 Adam Raised a Cain
03 Something in the Night
04 Candy's Room
05 Racing in the Street

I was just coming to post that pic, DJ.

Got an email this morning about the presale--$115 and that is either DVD or BluRay. Also, you get a tee shirt and poster. I was hoping for a BTR boxset pricepoint, but this is a pretty amazing set.

For the selfish and the childless, this is a no-brainer. Gimme me the fucking Blu-Ray.

Video preview and an audio stream of "Save My Love" (a sort of E street by numbers track IMHO) on brucespringsteen.net

Edit: the demo of "Sherry Darlin'" is fucking awesome.

I had the extremely good fortune to score last minute tickets to both the gala premiere last night, and the interview with Ed Norton that preceded it.

The interview took place in a small theater in the Toronto film festival's new building. A few hundred filled the room. Patti sat nearby. Ed Norton was not the best interviewer by any means, and I suppose it was painted as more of a conversation than an interview, but he certainly knows how to weave his way around a question. Nonetheless, Bruce was very eloquent, speaking of his influences, his upbringing, the places from which Darkness was born, artistic imprint, and the survivor fame of guilt. It was surreal to witness, validating to hear him speak with such reverence and graciousness, and a rare treat to be in spitting distance of The Boss. Hour-long discussion, with no performance, though there was an acoustic tuned for him backstage.

The film itself is wonderful. A very well balanced insight into the making of the album and to the characters that contributed to it. Really great studio footage, and of Bruce's home in Holmdel, NJ, where most of the album was written. I'll not say much more, because regardless this will be a pleasure to watch for anyone that has this album somewhere in their soul. See it when you can.

Encore presentation today. My family is sick I love em.

ooooh! can't wait to hear how you all like the film!
my favourite scene is driving down near the boardwalk in asbury park in the rain with racing in the streets on the soundtrack.

JESUS. Guess which album I'll be playing all weekend now?

I could listen to that guy wax poetic about the romanticism of rock n roll for hours.

You're gonna love it. Just the sheer amount of material he was writing and trying out is incredible. Not to mention rearranging and cutting up with every one of 'em.

Pretty much makes the soundtrack an automatic purchase to hear those songs left off the record.

Watched it. LOVED it. Dude, how crazy would it be to be able to look through those notebooks of his? I mean I knew he wrote everything down but DAYUM.

Yeah that was awesome. I'll probably watch it again later this month after listening to Darkness a bunch to really get a feel for it.

I was just thinking how impossible it would be for an artist to keep all of their publishing these days.

fucking LOVED it...Love watching Stevie & Bruce together, beating the shit out of a pillow writing a song they initially thought no one would ever hear.

Ok, I don't know too much about Bruce or the band's history with drugs, but this was the seventies...throughout the whole film it looks like they're either coked up out of their minds or coming down the next day...Bruce looks tiiiiiired.
