Post your all-star band of living musicians. I'm not sure about Mark's style fitting the band...but he has one of my favorite rock singing voices.

Singer - Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits)
Lead Guitar - Billy Duffy (The Cult)
Rhythm Guitar - Izzy Stradlin (Guns N' Roses)
Bass - Mike Mesaros (The Smithereens)
Drums - Dave Grohl (QOTSA)

Mike Watt - bass
Jack White - rhythm guitar
Matt Cameron - drums

Oh man. There are a lot of potentially great line-ups. But, off the top of my head:

Thurston Moore - guitar (Sonic Youth)
Lou Reed - guitar (The Velvet Underground, his own damn self)
Josh Homme - vocals (Queens of the Stone Age)
Emmylou Harris - backup vocals (Herself)
Meg White - drums (White Stripes)
Doug Pinnick - bass (King's X)

last two are hard because I don't really pay attention to either drums or bass when I listen to music. Well, I notice when it is extremely poorly done... I mean, I think that Les Claypool is a great technical bassist, but wouldn't see him mixing well with everything else. ::shrug:: So both my bassist and drummer picks are throw-aways. But I could see that line-up potentially producing something really interesting (if everything came together in an ideal sort of way).

I'd like to hear what came out of this. And, watch the recording sessions live.

I'm gonna go with bands that have formed in recent years (within past 10-15 or so, give or take), to leave out all of the default classic rock dinosaurs:

Lead Vocals: Jim James
Backing Vocals: Neko Case & Zooey Deschanel (She & Him)
Guitars: M. Ward & Tad Kubler (Hold Steady)
Bass: Freddy Feedback (Art Brut)
Drums: Patrick Carney (Black Keys)
Keys: Britt Daniel (Spoon)

I'd also like to see Jack White and Stewart Copeland team up on a project at some point.

guitars, vox - Andy Partridge (XTC, Dukes)
guitars - Mickey Melchiondo aka Dean Ween (Ween, Moistboyz)
bass - I don't know...Jon Brion would cut it I'm sure...someone who plays real well melodically
drums - Kevin Robinson (Viva Voce, Blue Giant)

Quite the Frankenstein there. Don't know if Dean would get along with the others or not.

That's one of those "consider the source" moments.

I'm entitled to like his drumming on that album best.
