Hope it's Mullen or something unexpectedly awesome like Leach. I like Urban a lot, but he should've stepped down after the Alabama game last year.

F'n Addazio.

Also, heard today that Vanderbilt has offered Gus Malzahn $3 MILLION to come coach there...

why would any coach, even on the junior varsity level, ever want to coach at Vandy? Money is great, but its a perennial loser and you have to be SMARKG to play there so high-quality athletes who want to go to the NFL avoid it like the plague.

It's career suicide as things currently stand but, there have been reports that Mike Slive and other SEC officials are starting to grow weary of cutting Vandy huge checks for their share of the SEC pot while failing to really invest back into their program.

Not to mention the fact the dissolving of their athletic dept. is still a sore spot behind closed doors. (or so I've heard/read)

Yeah, why the fuck not? Sign me up!

But to answer your question, Stu: If this is true and they are going to pay this kind of money (when I believe in the past they had said they would never pay the football coach more than the Dean of the medical school), then it means they want to get into the Football Business a little bit. And shit, they are already in the SEC which means they get a share of not one, but two BCS checks most years AND a share of those big ol' TV contracts with ESPN and CBS so it's not a particularly big stretch.

Small schools with high(er) standards can do well in CFB if they want to.

Sure. Hell, Wake Forest has half the enrollment of Vandy and has played in a BCS game.

Another Stanford note: I hear Harbaugh wants the 49'ers job.

Harbaugh can have pretty much any job he wants at this point. And, I'm always amazed at the number of NFL players from Vandy. It's many more than you'd think. (Don't ask for numbers)

It's currently 10.

(Which based on a very quick survey, is slightly more than West Virginia and Kansas have and slightly less than Kentucky, Washington and Miss. State have.)

Pretty fucking fantastic time killer with this information: http://espn.go.com/nfl/college

I'm surprised Cincinnati has 14.

Also, I'm sure Will Muschamp's departure to Gainesville has the paper's sports section (which is about 3 yards from where I sit) at DEFCON Zero. Folks is touchy about their 'Horns football right now after a 5-7 season. No place better than a newsroom when big stuff like that is breaking. None.

I'm surprised that:

1. Muschamp was the only guy on Foley's radar.

2. They hired a guy with zero head coaching experience. Huge risk/reward and Florida is not really the place to take those risks.

Put it this way: firewillmuschamp.com has already been bought.

Yeah, I agree it's a surprising hire for the exact same reasons you posted. I can see it working out for Florida, but it seems that they were in a position to hire a more certain coach.

I can't help but think the growing importance of recruiting rankings has something to do with this. And Florida doesn't want to lose their class to Jimbo who is raking up right now. I'm guessing Foley sees hiring someone quickly who is a young good recruiter would stop the leaking of recruits. Short sighted but it's the only sense I can make of hiring an unproven coach so quickly. And it's not like Muschamp did an excellent job in Texas this year.
