I saw and liked all of these, except MEH-gamind (which could have been so much better) and How to Train Your Dragon (didn't hate it, but it was merely average).

Machete and Social Network were my favs this year, with Inception and Cyrus close behind. The Town and Easy A were also quite good.

Really need to see The Secret in Their Eyes.

Exit Through the Gift Shop and Restrepo would be in my top 10.

I think I've seen 3 2010 movies.

Hoping to at least go see True Grit before the year's over.

Can someone explain the Oscar nomination vs date release calendar to me?

I've never been clear on this. I thought all movies had to be released in 2010 calendar year to be eligible for the 2011 Oscars?

I know that these:

Are 2009 releases. Not saying you shouldn't count them husker (i didn't see them until this year either), just curious about that. I just think it's difficult to make these kinds of lists when studios usually don't release their Oscar candidate until late in the year and they usually don't get limited release, much less wide release, until January or February.

As for 2010 movies, of the stuff I've seen this year I really liked The Social Network, The Ghost Writer, The Kids Are Alright, and The Fighter so far..

Been wanting to see Winter's Bone for a while now.

Also........more like MEH-chete. Blech. Horrible disappointment.

Yeah, I'm not sure about how they handle that either. For my purposes, I always use the U.S. limited or wide release date from IMDB.com. If it's just a festival release, I don't count it. For example, "The Secret in Their Eyes" came out officially in Argentina on 8/13/09. It first was released in the U.S. on 11/4/09 at the AFI Film Festival. And it came out in limited release in the US on 4/16/10. So, I use the 4/16/10 date as my basis for inclusion. But I'm sure the Academy uses a much more complicated rule than that...

I can't decide if I kind of liked Scott Pilgrim or really fucking hated it. I go back and forth.

Quote:
Currently, according to Rules 2 and 3 of the official Academy Awards Rules, a film must open in the previous calendar year, from midnight at the start of January 1 to midnight at the end of December 31, in Los Angeles County, California, to qualify (except for the Best Foreign Language Film). For example, the 2010 Best Picture winner, The Hurt Locker, was actually first released in 2008, but did not qualify for the 2009 awards as it did not play its Oscar-qualifying run in Los Angeles until mid-2009, thus qualifying for the 2010 awards.

Rule 2 states that a film must be feature-length, defined as a minimum of 40 minutes, except for short subject awards, and it must exist either on a 35 mm or 70 mm film print or in 24 frame/s or 48 frame/s progressive scan digital cinema format with native resolution not less than 1280x720.

Producers must submit an Official Screen Credits online form before the deadline; in case it is not submitted by the defined deadline, the film will be ineligible for Academy Awards in any year. The form includes the production credits for all related categories. Then, each form is checked and put in a Reminder List of Eligible Releases.

In late December ballots and copies of the Reminder List of Eligible Releases are mailed to around 6000 active members. For most categories, members from each of the branches vote to determine the nominees only in their respective categories (i.e. only directors vote for directors, writers for writers, actors for actors, etc.); there are some exceptions though in the case of certain categories, like Foreign Film, Documentary and Animated Feature Film in which movies are selected by special screening committees made up of member from all branches. In the special case of Best Picture, all voting members are eligible to select the nominees for that category. Foreign films must include English subtitles, and each country can only submit one film per year.

The members of the various branches nominate those in their respective fields while all members may submit nominees for Best Picture. The winners are then determined by a second round of voting in which all members are then allowed to vote in most categories, including Best Picture.

I saw The Town. Which puts me in Yail Bloor in the early 00s territory for movies seen in a theater in the last 4-5 years.

I really want to see Social Network, Inception, and The Prophet. I also find myself in love with the chick from Easy A.

Yeah I want to see all three of these as well. I have a bootleg of The Social Network that I guess we're gonna watch as soon as we finish with this season of The Wire.

I really hate that I missed Inception while it was in the theaters. I doubt the small screen will do it justice.

Shit, was Shutter Island last year or early this year? That gets me to 2 if it was this year. Ha.

Shutter Island was February 2010 (or maybe March). Early this year, after getting pushed back from an October 2009 release. For Oscar reasons.
