Also, Jason Falkner covered "Jet Silver & the Dolls of Venus" on his album last year. Maybe it's time for a BBD rediscovery.

Thanks for the Falkner record. I think I have a different version of the track Princessa. The full length sounds like they worked on the vocal a bit.

DL-ing Ronnie Lane now.

Edit: Wow, it's practically a note for note cover of Jet Silver. Even sounds like he's playing a 345.

Maybe an obvious two-fer:

As fine a live album as I've ever heard. Morrison smokes through a few of the better-known (referring to them as hits might be an over-statement) up-until-then songs (Caravan, Into The Mystic, Warm Love, etc.), takes a few bluesy/ R&B numbers and drills them (I Believe To My Soul, Take Your Hand Out Of My Pocket, etc), and paints magic with Saint Dominic's Preview and Cypress Avenue. All this backed by the at-the-time newly formed Caledonia Soul Orchestra, a remarkable assemblage of talent that stays with Morrison note for note, no small feat backing that guy. Brilliant from start to finish.

Image

If I recall correctly, Morrison moved back to the British Isles prior to recording Veedon Fleece. The relocation breaks loose the Celtic poet from shadows and stands him out front with autobiographical stories draped in haunting, simple melodic turns. You Don't Pull No Punches, But You Don't Push The River is 8+ minutes worthy of Joyce. And Bulbs kicks my ass every time I hear it. This one was so poorly received by the critics at the time of its release, Morrison went into 3 years of brooding self-exile from recording, although its merits have been re-evaluated in the ensuing years. One of my very favorite VM albums.

While this is not my favorite Be-Bop Deluxe record, it's one of my favorite records overall. A very competent starting point for a band that shined brightly (albeit briefly), and launched the career of one of the most prolific but vastly under appreciated guitarists of our time. Bill Nelson has always been an innovator, never afraid of experimentation, even to the point of not doing "guitar solos" anymore to move in a new direction. (Drastic Plastic/1977) While there is a Bowie influence here, I get tired of hearing how Be-Bop was a Bowie ripoff, which is simply not true. He took whatever influence, expanded it and created something new. Key tracks - Jet Silver & The Dolls of Venus - Adventures In A Yorkshire Landscape - Jets At Dawn - Love Is Swift Arrows - Rocket Catherdals. Nelson's guitar playing is nothing short of incredible on this record.

Some fine Southern grooves on here. 'Skin It Back' is killer.

I sought this album out years ago due to "Late for the Sky" being the song Travis Bickle watches people dance to on American Bandstand in Taxi Driver. It's such a great, depressing song that turned out to epitomize the rest of this album (mostly). Two of the songs I don't really like, "The Road and the Sky" and "Walking Slow" especially, are different stylistically and to me don't fit that well with the rest of the tracks. The others are all pretty great, particularly "For a Dancer", "Before the Deluge" and of course the title song.

I'll add this to the fray for a little country influence
Image

Not the best Waylon but its pretty damn good and one of the finest country albums from the 70s. Not as rabble rousing as Honky Tonk Heroes and maybe a little more reflective of living hard. What I've always loved about Waylon is he both celebrated hard living and criticized it. Usually at the same time. He idolized Hank Williams but always regretted the toll it took on him.
