Thumbs up for the Ike Reilly & Micah Hinson.

Interested in checking out The 88, Art Brut & that Shooter Jennings record.

Somehow I've never gotten around to listening to that Son Volt...care to upload?

I'd also like to hear that Shooter Jennings.

Jet Pilot off of that Son Volt record is my favorite song regarding the Bush era. I think you'll like it.

'4th of July' might be my favourite song of 2005.

Thanks.

I feel like every record posted in here was discussed at some point or at the very least mentioned somewhere along the way.

There are probably reasons why I didn't listen to some of these. I read about them and decided they weren't my cup of tea to begin with.

Admittedly, the access to information about artists and albums does give this thread a different feel.

That said, am interested in the Micah P. Henson and Marianne Faithfull albums toze and billy posted.

While the album as a whole hasn't quite stayed with me like it did at the time, I'll stand by "Feel Too Young To Die" and "I Am Six Pounds Of Dynamite" as being in the running for songs of the year.

I went back and looked at my Top 20 and it was decidedly pop-heavy that year.

But, one that didn't make it that would've had I heard it then was:

Image

Portastatic- Bright Ideas

If you don't know, this is Mac McCaughan's solo project (Superchunk) under which he's put out several quality releases.

If you've ever been a fan of the Chunk then you should hear this. A bit more introspective with some more mellow numbers but still some of the upbeat stuff they're known for. This was put out right after they went on hiatus so I'd wager that some of this stuff could've been material intended for the full band. Regardless, I think this or "Be Still Please" are his best solo work.

Also, I recently listened to that Clap Your Hands Say Yeah record from this year and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

Jet Pilot rocks.
Maybe not as obvious as JP, but non album track 'Joe Citizen Blues" fits right in there as well.

Yail - I'll up this later tonite when I get home.

So this is pretty good, but man does it veer awful close to the Kid Rock side of the street at times.

Derris, I enjoyed that Portastatic as well even though I haven't listened to it in a hell of a long time.

I actually think the record as a whole isn't that good, but that 4th of July is one of the best songs of the 00s (Top 50 or so)

For my trip cross-country I probably played that Shooter album & KoL's Aha Shake about a billion times.

Based on these links back to RYM I was listening to some pretty mediocre music in 2005, but I still come back to several of these...

Sorry about the delay Yail. I've been having computer issues since Friday, but they're now resolved.

Pulled this out over the weekend and I need to correct myself here. This album might be even better than I remembered. Forgot about some of the deep cuts that I love.

Strangely, I don't like his work with Centromatic near as much as this.

Maybe I should revisit this known simply as the 'Cat' record. I remember liking a few of the tracks. The very first SSG, 'SSG Songs' is very good, albeit a mellow listen compared to any of the Centromatic catalogue. 'All The Falsest Hearts Can Try' & 'Navagational' are the ones I reach for most.

I really like this a lot. Maybe even more than the last two SV records (both of which I've been a big fan of). There's a bit of an edge that the last two have smoothed out (especially in the guitars, which sound really nice).

I should probably also mention that billy g and rp74 have been selling me on this record for years: You were right, guys. Good shit.

Son Volt has all the ingredients I like, but I could never connect with them.

Is it Farrar's voice? I could see that being a deal breaker.

I can play the albums and appreciate them, but overall Son Volt just lacks that extra bit to make me ever want to revisit. It's how I feel about Built to Spill as well.
