I was listening to Tricky and massive attack today and heard karmacoma and overcome close together and that got me wondering if there were any other songs where an artist remade their own songs. I know remix are popular, but this is seems to be a different thing entirely.

I think that Overcome is much better, btw.

Bands re-record old songs all the time. Is that what you mean?

The most recent one I can think of is "Catch My Fall" appears on the first Whiskey & Co and again on their new one. Usually the excuse is "we just thought it could be better."

Lots of older artists would re-record their material when they switched labels, from Johnny Cash to Frank Sinatra to Andy Williams.

Many artists re-record early singles or tracks from EPs for their debut album ("Radio Free Europe" comes to mind right now, but I'm sure there are tons of others).

Many artists re-record songs when a greatest hits compilation comes out ("Don't Stand So Close To Me" and "The Sweetest Thing" come to mind immediately).

There's a bunch of crossover between songs from Black Flag and Red Kross and the first Circle Jerks because of Circle Jerks coming from those 2 bands and taking either music or lyrics with them. A couple songs both Black Flag and the Circle Jerks do, but a lot of it is changed around slightly for the new group but is still a lot of the same material. I recall seeing someone who had sorted it all and written down exactly what matched up with what, but I can't recall where and that's way more effort than I'd put into the thing.

harry nilsson did a record where he redid songs from 2 albums that he thought had aged poorly. i'm split on those, as some are definitely better and others are plagued with too much noodling.

John Fogerty was actually sued by the record company who owned the publishing rights to the early CCR stuff. They claimed "The Old Man Down the Road" was too much like "Run Through the Jungle."

Gotta listen to both again to see how similar they are...

Pretty sure Chuck Berry recorded most of his more popular songs 2 or 3 different times for releasing a hits compilation on a new label. I've got a later collection that is kinda fun to listen to as it is all the songs from the 50s, but recorded much later and the versions are all more slowed down and ornate. I mean, the originals are the real deal and all, but it is nice to hear a different take on 'em sometimes.

Wes Miles recorded "Can You Tell" with Ra Ra Riot in 2007, then released another version called "Can You Discover?" with Discovery in 2009.

it wasn't until just a few years ago that someone accurately pointed out to me that joe walsh's "rocky mountain way" and steve miller's "the stake" are exactly the same song

Sometimes I get a melody or lyric or something stuck in my head and I turn it into a song. It's always a great feeling, but sometimes a few days later I'll listen to the song I wrote again and realize that I stole it from some one elses song with out realizing it. Also when ever I leave a band I take my songs, or sometimes other bandmates songs, with me. I guess it's the same thing.

There are even fewer letters, yet we seem to have a lot of books.

Jonathan Richman frequently re-records things.

Bingo. Was wondering if anyone else noticed.

And, BTW, the best example(s) I can think of to answer the real question is "the entire Ramones catalog."

In that spirit, you could also use about 70% of all Bo Diddley songs.

Other than FT, it seems like most people's answers are on-point to me. Artists re-making their own material.

You mean Aerial Pandemonium Ballet where he sort of remixes/re-records/splices together songs from Aerial Ballet and Pandemonium Shadow Show? I also sort of have mixed feelings about it, but I mostly think it's unnecessary. The two original albums don't sound any more dated than the mutant hybrid version of them does.

If that's what you're talking about.

I get Radcliffe's complaint, though, and this Harry Nilsson thing isn't really a good example of what Leon's talking about. I think Leon was referring to when an artist re-records/re-releases what is essentially the same material under a different name, perhaps with a different group or solo.

As in not just re-recording the same song with the same title. Making a new recording with the same basic lyrics, melody, etc. that are the same as an older recording, but giving it a new title.

Aerosmith definitely nicked their 'Na-Na-Na' melody from 'Lick and a Promise' for 'Jaded'.

Ding Ding Ding, thank you for articulating it far better than I did. The thing that made the question interesting for me was that Karmacoma and Overcome are basically the same song, but are also both well known, and great songs in their own right, with their own feel. So it's different than a cover, but different than an entirely new thing.

Ah, gotcha, so my Ra Ra Riot/Discovery example works, but not my earlier post. Makes sense.
