Okay, not really.

What I want to know is did the entire Schiavo "event" prompt anyone to have a talk with their loved ones about what they would want done in a similar situation?

Anyone look into living wills?

My wife and parents pretty much knew where I stood on the subject but I still found myself investigating Georgia's living will.

It's really straighforward, doesn't require a lawyer and is not complicated at all. You basically just choose under what condition you would want the living will to apply, choose options for what life sustaining procedures you would or would not want performed and sign it in front of witnesses.

I think I'm going to go for it. Why force my family to go through the stress of making those kind of decisions.

Steve

we had our own situation with my grandmother last summer, so we'd all made everyone aware of our desires. during the schiavo thing i did get paranoid and start asking everyone that i ran into about what they wanted and if they knew what i wanted, just to be safe.

Two weeks ago, my dad took me aside and informed me that he had a living will, and that I should have one too, as well as a regular will.....At 32, it kind of creeped me out, but I guess it is a good thing to have

watching the coverage:

me: "if that ever happens, kill me there and now"
my girlfriend: "done"

and that was it. i also called my parents, just to keep shit straight. They weren't as gung-ho, but understood and respected my decision.

My entire family knows that if I'm brain-dead, my wishes are to have my organs harvested and pull the plug. No need to have a family take care of someone who's never going to return.

what I worry about is my wife dying and me getting pickled - and then our insane parents duking it out.

We have not prepared a living will/advance medical directive yet, but both my husband and I are aware of what we want done. My parents will be visiting next week, and I'll be passing along the info to them as well.

I think Loogar means that much like Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel or da Vinci's Mona Lisa he will retain a certain immortality.

...send my mouth
way down south
and kiss my ass goodbye.

but, please don't bury me
down in the cold, cold ground
no, i'm gonna have 'em cut me up
and pass me all around
throw my brain in a hurricane
and the blind can have my eyes
and the deaf can take both of ears
if they don't mind the size.

I'm no lawyer by any means, but I've read more than a handful of articles lately that show a propensity for not only family but also doctors to ignore living wills a good deal of the time.

Most of these stress the need for a trusted individual wielding true power of attorney privileges to actually make the decision in question.

Making it's way around my office:

New Living Will

Signed by both of us and delivered to attorney in
triplicate.

I, _________________________ (fill in the blank),
being of sound mind and body, do not wish to be kept
alive indefinitely by artificial means.

Under no circumstances should my fate be put in the
hands of peckerwood politicians who couldn't pass
ninth-grade biology if their lives depended on it. If
a reasonable amount of time passes and I fail to sit
up and ask for a cold beer, it should be presumed that
I won't ever get better. When such a determination is
reached, I hereby instruct my spouse, children and
attending physicians to pull the plug, reel in the
tubes, and call it a day.

Under no circumstances shall the members of the
Legislature enact a special law to keep me on
life-support machinery. It is my wish that these
boneheads mind their own damn business, and pay
attention instead to the health, education, and the
future of the millions of Americans who aren't in a
permanent coma.

Under no circumstances shall any politicians butt into
this case. I don't care how many fundamentalist votes
they're trying to scrounge for their run for the
presidency in 2008, it is my wish that they play
politics with someone else's life and leave me alone
to die in peace. I couldn't care less if a hundred
religious zealots send e-mails to legislators in which

they pretend to care about me. I don't know these
people, and I certainly haven't authorized them to
preach and crusade on my behalf. They should mind
their own business, too.

If any of my family goes against my wishes and turns
my case into a political cause, I hereby promise to
come back from the grave and make his or her existence
a living hell.
