Speaking of Camaros, on a related note, I was leaving work yesterday and pulled up to a light, looked next to me and there was a guy wearing aviator glasses and a tank top with a thick mustache and feathered hair. He was driving a black Trans Am with a big gold bird on the hood just like Smokey & the Bandit...but with more rust. Pretty sure he was not being ironic and I had just fallen through some sort of time portal.

By the way...been enjoying riding a bike lately. Been using one of my brother's that was about 25 years old and last night after dinner looked at the tires and realized the rubber was worn away all over the place and I was basically riding on the woven fabric looking stuff underneath. Felt pretty unsafe. After thinking about the cost of new tires, a new seat I need and getting the thing tuned up, seemed hardly worth it. Grabbed a new bike last night. Nothing fancy and all you real bike people will laugh at me for only spending a couple hundred bucks on a Schwinn from Target, but it sure as hell rides a lot better than what I had before and I wasn't in the mood to go spend 500 bucks or more at a bike shop for something. I will now be bar-hopping on this...

Anybody on a bike is a friend of mine. That looks practical as hell.

[unsolicited advice] Lube the chain once in awhile. That's the one thing most people don't do that kills their bike in 12 months. (WD-40 isn't chain lube, either.) [/advice]

Yeah, practicality was basically all I was going for. Wanted a comfortable seat and fat tires that I didn't worry about when riding over potholes. That was about the only one they had that fit both of those criteria. And if nothing else, this at least gives me something that feels a hell of a lot safer to ride. The thing has a ridiculous number of gears that I could do without, but oh well. Thanks for the advice. I did realize that WD-40 was bad for bikes...would strip the grease off from what I understand. But, I did not know you really needed to lube the thing regularly. How often are you talking?

Can't say I will ever be super into riding, but I'm enjoying getting out a couple times a week and when I'm meeting people not too far from home on a nice day, I enjoy riding more than driving. Even getting used to the traffic now and don't get too horrified of using busy roads...although I do avoid them when possible just 'cause it's more fun to ride if you're not having to be careful about someone knocking you over.

Coincidentally, I just got my bike out last night, as well as my son's bike. Wiped the dust off, aired up the tires, and will look for the chain lube tonight (which I was too lazy to do last night) so hopefully he and I can go for a ride tonight or tomorrow morning.

You're just riding on the street, so just get a lube that the bike shop recommends (nothing too thick, that just attracts & keeps dirt). Wipe off the chain, and dab the new lube on every link (don't spin the pedals and run the tip of the lube on the chain, you want it on each of those rollers). Let it sit for a bit, half hour maybe & then wipe the chain off again. Unless you're riding thru dusty fields, you should be good for a while (month or two). If it starts making noise (grinding, etc.), it's probably dry. Repeat.

You could have done a lot worse than that Schwinn. Good for you- enjoy it!

Must be bike week. I bought this 3G single-speed cruiser rat rod a couple days ago to beat around the neighborhood on. First time I've been on a bike in 30 years. Love it.

Check out my friends' video on Funny or Die. This one is featured on their main page today. (These are the sketch comedy group that did the Safe Auto commercial contest in lobster suit.)

Actually already exchanged that bike. Rode it once and talked to a guy and then read a bunch of stuff saying how cheap bikes with shock absorbing things were trouble and inevitably failed really fast, so switched it out for a similar bike without shocks. Also, being in the Gateway City, I liked this one called the Gateway anyhow... I think this will do nicely.

And yes, still well aware this is nothing fancy compared to real boke people bikes, but it is comfy and I am gonna go ride to the pride parade in a few. Couple years from now if I'm still riding...then I think about a fancy bike.

Some people get sentimental about dogs or children but I have to admit when I read this earlier today on the internet it brought a little tear to the eye.

"I once had a very Kraftwerk looking top loading CD player that started to malfunction until nothing would play on it. Months later I tried it again hoping to get CDs to play but it wouldn't until I put 'Radioactivity' in there. Even then it wouldn't play any tracks except 'Ohm Sweet Ohm'. The CD player played the track once and after that it finally died. It was as if it said goodbye in its own electro-mechanical way...."

Every bike I have owned since college was stolen. I gave up on decent bikes. Thankfully, I found a place that cobbles together bit parts and sells them 50 bucks each. Got the wife and I a set of Franken-Cruisers and they're fine single speed run-a-rounds.

Nice toze. There's a great quote by HG Wells that goes something like:

"Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race."

Or something like that.

I interpret that to mean life has many simple pleasures, and riding a bike is one of them.

My current job is only 4 miles from my house and I've debated on getting a bike and riding it to work a couple times a week but that distance is juuuuuust too far to just get a beater. I'd need a few gears.
