Match 6

radcliffe : Everybody Else - Rich Girls, Poor Girls :
Solid reg-rock with a little power pop kick. Energy, good chorus, and little to no wank. I'll probably not tire of this anytime soon,, and I'm salivating at the possibility that they have songs even better than this. 7/10

boobiedewton : Riverdales - I Will Make It Up To You:
Regular ramonescore with no kick at all. Trying to find something redeeming here, but yeesh. There's probably a half-dozen Riverdales songs I would rate 7/10 or higher. This is quite a few levels below that. 4/10

Wins: 4-3
Points: 47-47

Match 7

toots : Farben - Raute :
Microhouse! Such a perfect name for what this sounds like! Do I need to say more? It's cute little blips and bips, layered and technical. Not much of a melody and no major theme within the 7+ minutes to latch onto. Not very enjoyable. 3/10

read hard : McRackins - Pressed Ham
: This is kinda funny. Gotta love that one acoustic ballad from a joke band. Expressing their love with a pressed ham. This is one of the better McRrackins songs I've heard. That being said, 4/10

Wins: 4-4
Points: 50-51

Match 8

dalen : New Order - Age of Consent
: The first 90 seconds of this song is just 80s pop rock - solid and bouncy but ultimately fluff and non-captivating. But when the synth comes in and guitar takes a turn everything just works, man. So much dance rock stand on the shoulders of these guys (for better for worse). Love everything coming together at the end. Especially the foot clomps(?) adding to the percussion. 9/10

moe: Future Virgins - Nowadays : This band is tagged as both orgcore and pop punk. One of my pet peeves. There's parts with really good vocals doing a fairly good job carrying the tune. Then there's the beardo scream vox that jar my ears. Dear bands, please don't ruin your own songs with vocals like this, thanks. 4/10

Wins: 5-4
Points: 59-54

Ugh, Moe really shit the bed with that song. Totally agree with you about the vocals. Oh, and Temptation is the greatest New Order track, but Age of Consent is a very close second.

I'm really surprised that Rockaway Beach only warranted a 7/10 from Bort.

In the wins and points tallies it goes

Obner-PPMB

So Obner is winning so far.

Rockaway Beach is good. Not my favorite Ramones song and the Ramones aren't even in my top 10 favorite pop punk bands. Plus it was actually a live version (either mistagged or on a R2R reissue?). So there ya go.

Match 9

shiv : Joel Alme - When Old Love Keeps You Waiting
: Swedish singer-songwriter doing a kind of orchestral pop thing. Nothing particularly noteworthy, although the song is good and well executed. What more can you ask for? 6/10

doctoracula - Black Wine - Spit To See The Shame : I like Black Wine. I like the 90s. They've got the style and definitely the chops to be simultaneously retro and rocking out on their own terms. I didn't think they would be so polarizing on the other board, but apparently they are. I would've rated this track higher but i think they stole this riff from Hammerhead or something. 7/10

Wins: 5-5
Points: 65-61

Match 10

drinky : Manic Street Preachers - Mausoleum
: Good old school brit rock. A semi-spaztic verses and a frenzied chorus. Maybe sliiiiiightly dated sounding, but one of the tracks where the Manics live up to their name. 7/10

ihatesock : House Boat - Tired Pleas :
The Steinways Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Still, this is the kind of quick and quirky poppy punk that I dig. 7/10

TIE BREAKER

ihatesocks : Atom & His Package : Open Your Heart
: I like this guy but I actually never got this album. A lot of other Atom songs would rate embarrassingly high with me, this isn't one of them. I like how he steals/integrates melodies of other songs into his own. 6/10

drinky - Pharaoh Sanders - Japan
: The interlude on Tauhid! What a pull! This song has 2 things going against it: It's hardly a song, at least not an interesting one. The melody it does have is very stereotypically Asian. I mean, there's a gong at the end. I'm tempted to rate this higher and do another tie-breaker, but c'mon, this track shouldn't rate more than a 5/10. A nerd with sequencer beats the saxophonist legend.

Wins: 5-6
Points: 70-68

"Japan" is great.

I probably should have lost for that Manic Street Preachers song anyway. They sound more than just slightly dated. I don't think they've aged well at all.

Match 11

ft : VV Brown - Game Over : Aw, if only this was one of her oldiescore songs you would have run away with it! Still, she's my favorite radio pop diva gal at the moment, and even tracks like these are enjoyable. Really like her voice, and the real feel of this song and her album in general. Lots of instruments, nice full sound, but it doesn't feel too thick with production and knob-twiddling. 8/10

mattaverage : New End Original - Lukewarm : Hey, I remember this Jonah guy. This song is good, too. I'm kinda excited that I've discovered something new, or at least rediscovered an old favorite. I will look into these guys to add to my punk/emo/indie rock collection. And, despite my enthusiasm the song itself is not as good as VV. 7/10.

Wins: 6-6
Points: 78-75

Match 12, it comes down to this shit.

harry : Shuttle 358 - Frame : Ambient, minimalist, "environmental space music." This doesn't bode well, but I'm gonna try to listen to all 7+ minutes just in case. The first 2.5 minutes are low-level synth with some Morse code. I'm trying to see if there's anything here that can at least earn some points or something, but no dice. Might as well be listening to distant car horns and rain drops. 3/10

milo : Rivethead - In My Heart A Warehouse Burns For You : 80 seconds of punk rock. Fairly standard, but more than catchy enough to land in the realm of enjoyment. I like the bands that these guys made after this band broke up. 6/10

Wins: 6-7
Points: 81-81

Pretty damn close, but PPMB wins the mega-world-championship.
