Kelli Schaefer :: Ghost of the Beast
This is kinda all over the place, though her voice makes up for its fractures. Out of the gate it sounds slightly Bjorkish, then she goes St. Vincent mode, and then some synthy numbers. I think once she figures out what exactly she wants to do, she could be really successful.

Completely gorgeous. Flowery and delicate music from the 25-year-old Malaysian singer/songwriter Zee Avi.

I liked it. Need to listen again to find what I did like about it. What opinions are out there?

Here they are performing on Fallon last night - http://pitchfork.com/news/43988-watch-g ... my-fallon/

below is a track-by-track review of Girls - Father Son and Holy Ghost:

Track's 1 and 2, "Honey Bunny" and "Alex", sound influenced by 50s/60s pop/Buddy Holly + 90s college radio rock
Track 3, "Die", sounds like it was heavily influenced by Deep Purple's "Highway Star" all the way down to the vocal melody with Black Mountain style PacNW stoner rock backing, then the last 1/3 of the song is a chilled-out stoner jam
Track 4 "Saying I Love You" carries on their affection for Elvis Costello mixed with folk-rock
Track 5 "My Ma'" Ryan Adams meets Elliot Smith with organ, guitar solos, a good bassline, soul/gospel "ooh aahs" and tasteful drums?
Track 6 "Vomit" sounds like a cross between latter day Spirtualized and The Thrills
Track 8 "Magic" has some Costello elements in the vocals and a mid-tempo 60s pop vibe
Track 9 "Forgiveness" is where they go Elliot Smith, both in mood and vocal similarity. The last 2 minutes is a standard guitar/bass/drums outro
Track 10 "Love Like a River" is a 12-bar blues tune that has been done a million times by white acts trying to ape this American song style
Track 11 "Jamie Marie" starts out at as a slow-burn love song with standard jazz-influenced, spare and clean tone electric guitar and ends with drums and organ straight out of Muscle Shoals by way of San Francisco hipsters

Overall, I think reg rockers and indie rockers alike would enjoy the album. They try to cover a lot of ground here, but it somehow stays cohesive with the exception of "Die"; the only thing that ties it to the rest of the album is the slide playing in the outro. It's definitely not original, but it's a decent listen.

I've only listened to it once, but it left me pretty cold. No surprise I guess since I really disliked Album, but I thought their last EP was decent. I suppose this is "decent", too, but for me it's just one more exceedingly dull 2011 album that some people are going apeshit over. (It's time for me to stop reading Pitchfork.)

I'm not sure I'd call it "going apeshit" over, but I really, really, like it. Probably the first time my tastes and a pitchfork review have matched up in over a year.

Metal musicians doing Beatles tunes. And yes, it's as bad as you would think.

Some of the songs/artists: "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" = Queensryche
"Tomorrow Never Knows" = Billy Idol
"Magical Mystery Tour" = Yngwie, Jeff Scott Soto
"Revolution (9)" = Billy Gibbons, Vivian Campbell
"Daytripper" = Jack Blades/Tommy Shaw
"I Feel Fine" = John Bush, Stef Carpenter
"Taxman" = Doug Pinnick, Steve Lukather
"Saw Her Standing There" = John Corabi, CC Deville
"Hey Jude" = Ripper Owens, George Lynch
"Drive My Car" = Kip Winger, Bruce Kulick
