Anyone have a favorite upright player

Other than me, of course...

I always thought the guy from Soul Coughing held it down nicely.

Descendents = Karl Alvarez (in their later incarnations anyway)
Soul Coughing = Sebastian Steinberg

Freeman. yes.

Let's not forget our own epa! I haven't heard him live, but the walk is half as good as his talk, he owns.

and when you think of how tall he is and how low he held his bass, he must have had the longest guitar strap in the history of time.

First guy I thought of. Check out "Axiom" and "Maxwell Murder" for the proof.

Joe Osborn - studio guy who's played on over 400 Top 40 hits from the early 60's on, Mamas and Papas, etc...

Carol Kaye - same deal as Joe Osborn. both played on Pet Sounds

James Jamerson and Chuck Rainey - House bassists for Motown

Anthony Jackson - another studio cat. Love his stuff with Chaka Khan

Peter Cetera - unstoppable with the first ten or so Chicago albums.

Paul McCartney - I'd kill to play bass as elegantly as he does

Larry Graham - Sly and the Family Stone (listen to the simple 8th note pulse on Everyday People and know that funk isn't about flash, it's about presence and style, and sheer gravity), and Prince.

Eric Carmen - before he pussed out with Hungry Eyes, he used to rock in The Raspberries. Every bass line is a careful study of McCartney and other British Invasion bassists.

"If You Want Me To Stay" may be the greatest bassline of all time. I had LG on my list, too.

the guy in 7 seconds absolutely owns, i just don't know his name
karl alvarez
jason black of hot water music
joe lally
any of those kooky "psychobilly" bands like tiger army and nekromantix have pretty cool upright bassmen

the coolest upright bass maneuver i've seen is the guy from the living end who stands on it while playing. i wasn't able to find any good pics of it, though...

this is my answer, even though i'm not that familiar with bassists contributions to the music i listen to. krist imprinted a lot onto nirvana's best songs.

I always thought Tom Petersson from Cheap Trick was really underrated - especially live.
