And he's left handed.

Agreed, Phil. I'll put Sting into that category as well (c'mon--bring the hate!).

Oteil Burbridge is probably the best bass player that I've ever stood three feet away from and just watched shred. Les used to pretty fun to watch back in the day when I saw them in some really small venues. But not like Oteil. Phew.

I'm also a big fan of the Duck Dunn and James Jameson school.

Pretty funny story: The first time I met DiscoStu last fall in Athens we were talking a bout music at the Roadhouse and he was asking me about playing bass. I think I said, "Ya know, I think I've been more inspired by Kim Deal than Les Claypool" or something.

I think most folks are like that. Most people are inspired to pick up an instrument by a band that they really love and it's usually along the lines of "hell, if they can do it....".

Actually Cliff Burton inspired me to play bass when I was in 7th grade, but yeah, I get you. Playing in bands with good-ass musicians helps as well.

How many points does Jimi Hendrix get for being a leftie but playing a right-handed bass upside frickin' down (for the recording of "All Along The Watchtower", 'cuz Noel Redding left the sessions in a snit)?

Whilst Hendrix deserves (and receives) and immense amoutnt of respect for his upside-downedness, Elizabeth Cotten is still te untouchable for playing a righty guitar upside down without restringing it.

Holger Czukay - Can

You can't really fuck with the Can rhythm section during their prime (69-74). If you ever get the chance to watch "Can: Free Concert" (on the Can DVD set) and can make it past the extremely annoying editing and cheesy "artsiness" of the direction, you'll see some great Holger moments. And he wears silly white gloves.

For jazz, you can't forget Scott LaFaro of the Bill Evans Trio from Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby.

no, lefty. Jimi would restring his guitars backwards so that it was in essence an uncomfortable shaped left-handed guitar. Cotten just turned the damned thing upside down and played. and if you haven't heard her playing it's no. fucking. joke.

Hendrix did that quite a bit yes--but when he played bass (on a large bulk of Electric Ladyland) he did play exactly upside-down. and he certainly did play guitar that way too at times (he could also play right-handed, but that's another ball of wax) but yr right for performances and such I think he mostly restrung.

what of Billy Corgan? a lefty who plays right-handed? I always thought that was pretty wild...

Except in the case of "All Along The Watchtower", which was Jimi playing Redding's right-handed bass upside down, not restrung. Take a listen to that song with that in mind. It's facking incredible.

Meat is Murder is full of excellent bass lines...Barbarism..., as you mentioned, also Rusholme Ruffians and The Headmaster Ritual. In general I find the rhythm section of The Smiths vastly underrated...Johnny Marr gets all the pub, and he is great, but the rhythm section is outstanding too.

I am a lefty who plays right-handed, and never really though that it was weird until you mentioned it. I wonder now if when I started playing stringed instruments 20 years ago and they had started me off playing lefty I could have been better, or different than I am now. Oh well.

Yeah, (being a lefty who plays lefty) is a harrowing experience; at least nobody can play your guitars, though Busty and the Cap'n are some damn good upside down bass playin' motherfuckers. Dudes like that rarely let dudes like me play on their studio recordings. Even if my basses do sound real good in the studio......

In that same vein, I'd be willing to bet money that Lindsey Buckingham plays every note of bass on Rumours.

Nice.

The guitarist from my band is a lefty who plays right-handed as well.

...And I would be too if I were to finally get my act together and learn my beloved bass, (not that I own one yet... it's just my favorite instrument and I've been threatening to learn it for, like, 12 years now).

Claypool was the reason I started playing bass but the more music I listen to, the more I can appreciate a real simple well-played groove.
