add stuff by year. no mediocre/merely-good material pls. really super, or leave it out. ok? (you know the best way to do this is to abuse each other, of course). also, i know this is really broad (and the terms 'electronica' and 'classic' are kindda hazy/ subject to much controversy etc) but who cares. lets dig up those unheralded, hidden gems etc. (and i am esp. hazy on those earlier years)

i'll try and update the list as we go along. game???

Nice list, I've heard and like a great majority of those.

How about
Image

Ulrich Schnauss - A Strangely Isolated Place

Image

Air - Moon Safari

Image Image

One of the BOC albums

I'd say all are considered classics

Also what about anything pre 1990

keep em coming.

also, for instance i know popish house like basement jaxx doesnt really file under "electronica" per se (or do they?? i got no clue) anyway feel free to twist and stretch that definition as you see fit

I think Tricky's Pre Millenium Tension is pretty ace too, but i guess Maxinquaye is considered his 'classic'

yeah. gus gus was marginal. but since it came out in '97 and stuff i just included it anyway. feel free to disagree...

personally i don't like BOC (they kindda bore me) but i can certainly see what they do with their sound is unique, so yeah

edit: OH FUCK I FORGOT UNDERWORLD HOW COULD I

Sorry, but a lot of the records above are VERY mediocre.

I'll add these real genre defining releases......

Goldie - Timeless [1995]

Bola - Fyuti [1997]

Boards Of Canada - Twosim [1995]

Black Dog - Bytes [1993]

Plastikman - Sheet One [1993]

Future Sound Of London - Papua New Guinea [1991]

Biosphere - Substrata Vol. 1 [1997]

Future Sound Of London - Lifeforms [1994]

Underworld - Beaucoup Fish [1999]

Leftfield - Leftism [1995]

Plaid - Rest Proof Clockwork [1999]

Plaid - Trainer [2000]

Amorphous Androgynous - Tales of Ephidrina [1993]

Richie Hawtin & Pete Namlook - From Within Vol.1 [1994]

Autechre - Incunabula [1993]

Adam F - Colours [1997]

Polygon Window - Quoth [1992]

Polygon Window - Surfing On Since Waves [1992]

AFX - Anologue Bubblebath [1993]

Sl2 - Way In My Brain [1992]

Global Communication - 76:14 [1994]

Ed Rush & Optical - Wormhole [1997]

These are ALL essential electronic music releases that have influenced not only electronic music, but many of the indie bands and rock bands [notwist, radiohead, etc] out today.

autechre - LP5
dj food - kaleidascope
bows - cassidy

I'd add two Amon Tobin albums: Permutation (1998) and Supermodified (2000), both of which are off the hook. In fact I think i'm going to listen to them right now.

Ditto on the Kraftwerk. (The Man Machine, 1978)
Portishead? Dummy is totally a classic if you'll let it in the genre.
Eno needs some seventies representation. Another Green World or Taking Tiger Mountain or summat.

Hah, iTunes genre sort wants New Order in there :)
