France agrees with you - read it on Yahoo news just a minute ago.

If you weigh the interests out, as is the wont of the law, I think the actual harm of this to be pretty low.

Yeah, but we can't just retroactively lower the flag for Easy E any old time we want like a bunch of frigging Mormons going around baptizing themselves for the dead. No one would know who it was for. "Why is the flag at half mast?" they would ask. "I don't know," others would respond.

It's not about harm. Obviously this isn't going to "harm" too many people. It's the principle. "It's about drawing a line in the sand...."

Even though a lot of the "rights" set out in the Constitution read like they are pretty rock-solid...you just always just add an "except" after most of the clauses and add in 5 to 10 things.

I respect your opinion, I just don't see why it crosses that line. Do you understand the seperation of church and state? Or is it just your stock dismissal of religion? Because I can dismiss me some religion.

If all you people don't agree, I don't care, it's your opinion. But that doesn't make me an ass hole for thinking this. My opinion is just as valid. There have been plenty of other people throughout history that deserve as much or more respect than the pope. The fact that millions of people loved him and he deserves respect is a bullshit reason to put the flag at half-mast. Like I said, you can disagree, but don't tell me to fuck off because I don't buy into this shit. Fucking pricks.

So, I'm a prick.

Yes, I do understand the separation of church and state. Though, I do have to admit my stock dismissal of religion did have something to do with it. :P

A real phone call in Atlanta on 9/12/01

Me:Why aren't the flags at our facilities at half-mast?
Facilities Administrator:Why would they be at half-mast?
Me:Because of what occured yesterday!
F.A.:Huh?
Me:Our country was attacked! They're estimating 10,000 dead.
F.A.:That was in New York

I, too, can dismiss me some religion. But when anyone "big" dies, they get the half-mast treatment. What makes it ok is that we don't just do it for christian figures. I ga-run-tee if the Dalai Lama died next week, those flags would be right back down again. As long as it's not religion-specific, I feel no offense. Now if we started dropping the flag for Jerry Falwells but not for Dalai Lamas, I'd be rioting.

That's because most Americans wouldn't understand lowering the flag for a deceased cloned sheep.

I think the Lama garners very similar respect world-wide, and he crosses more boundaries in the Like department than the gay-marriage-hatin' pope could. Everybody likes him. Everybody feels sorry for him except China. He's so famous and well-respected.

You really don't think so?

i think that worldwide you're right, and i think that if the pope gets it then he should to, and i equate the two... but i ain't the president and i would venture that i'm the only person in my office that can pick the buddhist out of anything not involving richard gere or a hamster.

I bet that it'd come down for a day. Not a whole week like for the pope.

Call me a monster, but this morning on the news when Katie Couric said something about a "final goodbye" to the pope, I crossed my fingers and fervently hoped she meant that literally. I deeply respect the man for what he accomplished, I wish he coulda lived to be 200, but I think we've gleaned all the news there is to glean from this by now.

They fly the flags at O'Hare if a plane nerfs it. If it's a non-US carrier, the US flag and the flag of the carrier's nation are flown at half mast. It's an observance. You get a holiday at Christmas don't you? Maybe you should work Christmas for staight time, then, and stop whining.

awesome

and no way they'd come down for the Dalai Lama. Unless he suddenly starts advocating gun rights and pro-life.

and the pope is getting the flag down for at least 9 days, probaly more if they forget to put them back up in most places like they did with Reagan.

I've got absolutely no problem with the flags being at half-mast, but I've got to say that I agree with Cotton. I don't think they go down for the Dalai Lama either.

Press Conference With The Dalai Lama and Richard Gere
Questions asked by Stuttering John to the Dalai Lama:
"How did it feel to wake up one day and realize you were God?"
"Do many people come up to you and say, "Hello, Dalai"?"

Afterwards Richard Gere told Stuttering John that he had a serious problem.

I work at a public university and that flag drops for just about anyone and anything. The pope, Kissinger, a gardener, a drunk frat boy who fell off the cliffs. We get by. I bet they'd give the DL a day.

We dropped flag for the tsunami victims, and probably for Momma Theresa as well.
