No talk about 30 for 30?

I thought it was fucking awesome. I also thought that Jalen Rose came across more like a guy who was assessing the way he thought as a somewhat bitter 19 year old now that he was 40 than a guy settling scores.

Jimmy King, Ray Jackson and Juwan all come across pretty well, too.

They were all producers, how did you expect them to come across? Open ghouls?

I enjoyed the film but was slightly annoyed going in based on the five minutes of the Simmons-Rose pdcast I listened to--I literally turned it off when I realized that Jalen was basically going to be rewriting history and Tom'n out folks for no good reason. The film did nothing to change that view: it was very much "The World According To Jalen Rose"

And then last night I read Jason Whitlock's piece which draws a lot of the same conclusions. (and probably goes too far but that's Whitlock's gimmick these days and he gets paid well to do it)

Also discussed it with the dude who works for me who is a huge hoops fan: He thought it was sorry that JR Tom'd out Grant Hill...both of us were surprised that people were still sending "Dear N****r" letters in the mid 90's. In Michigan no less. His line "they wouldn't even do that shit in Alabama, especially if they were winning"

Webber was too busy sleeping on the nearly $200 million he made having a pretty fucking average NBA career to be bothered.

But holy shit, I had forgotten how dominant dude was in college.

That's interesting on Jalen. In the doc, I kind of took his tone as being a little remorseful/reflective in why he thought that way when he was 19, not trying to destroy Grant Hill and his family.

If I hadn't been so immediately turned off by his tone in that podcast, I would have just dismissed JW's piece as a hatchet job but I think it at least opens a door for discussion.

I was hoping that the Runnin Rebs one would go from like, LJ and Augman and Anderson Hunt selling coke and bagging white broads in Steve Wynn's Penthouse to JR Rider smoking crack in the backseat of a car....but apparently it focuses mostly on the first championship squad.

Bumping this one as I'm getting the full box set as an early birthday present any day now. Very anxious to see many of these.

So, anybody watch "Roll Tide/War Eagle"?

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but, this rivalry deserved better.

It deserved the HBO treatment that OSU/Michigan and Duke/Carolina got. Not something from a guy who was born in England, grew up in Minnesota, and spent his adult life in California and only spent 3 weeks in the state.

When Paul Finebaum and Harvey Updyke are the glue that holds your film together, you've failed.

I can't imagine anyone from either fanbase being happy with it.

Watched Catching Hell last night via netflix. It was good, but could've been done in 60-90 mins. what took close to two hours. Nothing new really said, and to be honest, the only real revelation type moment was when they CG'd out the crowd, and then Bartman to show whether Alou could've made the catch.

I feel pretty much the same way. Even though I could listen to clips of crazy Finebaum calls all day. Jesus H Christ.

It was OPENLY TERRIBLE - and every dipshit in Alabama on both sides LOVED it. They all feel like their programs need to be on TV at all times.

Seriously, though, this was near unwatchable.

When will the ESPN doc about Sandusky not be too soon? & -- will Paul Giamatti still be around to narrate it?

(Also on the ESPN side: how much Viagra does it take for Tom Rinaldi to get an erection? From covering the bathetic (Tiger Woods) to the deranged (Sandusky), I imagine he's totally off sex.)

ESPN Doubles Up on ’30 for 30’ Documentary Series--New ones coming

I've loved this series though watching it through netflix as they become available has been a pain. Exciting that they will keep producing these.

These and the one about athletes going broke. I hope they concentrate more on telling a good story than on "breaking the mold" going forward.

Also, Simmons is going to make a mint with this whole integrated into Grantland with oral histories, animated films, etc. - stroke of genius by him (or his handlers).

I haven't been alone in saying that they needed to brand all of their docs as '30 for 30' for DVR's and simplicity and the like.

Seems like a no brainer to tie it all into Grantland with podcasts, oral histories and shorts. Good move. (i'm shocked)

Yeah, the Bo Jackson one should be good, especially when it ends with him hawking his food goods.

Really excited about the '83 NC State one (obviously). I believe I heard a few months back that it was being done by the same director who did the excellent Marcus Dupree one.

last night's Bad Boys doc is my fav to date. crazy to see how foreign that era's product is to today's standards. i miss hating laimbeer & isaiah, but now have greater respect for bill and even found thomas endearing during the grantland remix w/ jalen & BS. great stuff

i didn't know about Rodman not going directly to college and growing 7 inches in a year, dominating at a small school and being a 2nd round draft pick.

I watched the entire doc on the Hillsborough tragedy last weekend and thought it was great. And by great I mean horrifying.

I don't remember that incident at all. The way they build up to the actual moment with the real, grainy security camera footage and ominous background music made for pretty riveting stuff.
