Ok, can finally open this thread without worry of spoiling something.
My wife and I really loved it. I'd place Alien/Aliens in my top 10 favorite movies OAT, so this was definitely something that I had been fawning over, without getting too much into the viral stuff. As soon as I saw the first photos/stills from production, I knew it was going to be great. Seems like an odd thing to say, but from what I saw the integrity of the original films were being honored, while at the same time creating an atmosphere of its own.
I've heard a lot of people say that Prometheus is grudgingly slow, but I actually enjoyed the pace. And, in fact that was one of the things that made the first 2 films awesome. You'd have a few moments of incredible action/fright and then the rest of the time you're literally sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for things to happen. And, in Prometheus there was enough up and downs in story to really get you on the edge. I knew there wasn't going to be the same style of frights (which is another complaint), but it still kept me psychologically on edge.
The other great thing was, even though this was a called out prequel, there are too many similarities for the Alien franchise to not be attached. But, because it wasn't a direct hit into Alien--you had the joy of really wallowing in some fantastic mythology building, which I think the writers did expertly. There's just enough, a taste really, of what is found in Alien/Aliens that you know there has to be a connection, but that its free to find its own way.
Acting-wise, Micheal Fassbinder was excellent. The rest? They were serviceable. Making Naomi Rapace into a Ripley type character--it didn't work, at least for me. I just couldn't see her outside of her TGWADT persona. My wife, however, hasn't seen those films so thought she was great. Idris Elba is always charismatic on screen, and its cool to see him taking these sci-fi roles. Between Thor, this, and the upcoming Pacific Rim, he's becoming a viable sci-fi dude.
And, as someone who's a Christian I also appreciated and dug how they dealt with the whole (and potentially sticky situation) idea of faith. Much like Contact, they tie things just enough back to leave open all types of ideas.
Overall, I was really pleased. I hope this gets a great BR release with all types of extras. I'd love to hear Mr. Scott explain how this doesn't fit into the Alien mythology
