Probably the best thing to ever fall under the "ambient" moniker.

erm, for the time maybe, but not now. not even close.

artists like biosphere, pete namlook, dead texan, johann johannsson, deathprod, deaf center, and even max richter have outdone eno.

fair play to him for being an originator.

I'm gonna have to disagree about Dead Texan, Johann Johannsson, and Max Richter. I haven't heard the others - perhaps I should - and I admit I'm no ambient connoisseur.

I mean, I wouldn't doubt that somebody has outdone Eno, it just isn't the above three..

Somehow I find myself always disagreeing with the self-appointed "electronica experts" on any given message, not that I really have deep knowledge of the subject...

What no love for Adamski or Moby?

I will second this one because it is by far my favorite electronica album of all time.

Zero 7 Simple Things

Also the Postal Service’s Give Up, Menomena’s I Am the Fun Blame Monster and Erlend Oye’s DJ Kicks would be on my list.

If you go into DJ’s than there are countless ones.

Man, I remember that and wonder if I still own it. I do think I have it on LP somewhere.

i was gonna suggest the K&D Sessions but i'd say K&D fit more into the good albums you recommend, rather then 'classics'

excellent picks. i'm a huge fan of K&D and the Tosca and Peace Orchestra projects. did you check out the new Tosca album yet? very entertaining.

Nope...haven't heard it yet, but I guess now I gotta try to check it out. I liked Dehli9 a bunch, and really have liked just about everything outta them, so I'm sure it will be at least decent.

And, buy the way, the EBTG mention above reminds me to mention this classic...

i absolutely love that tempermental album by ebtg.

here are some of my picks:
kraftwerk- trans-europe express
masters at work- the album
underworld- dubnobasswithmyheadman
portishead- dummy
ltj bukem- logical progression, level 1
daft punk- homework
derrick may- innovator
sasha & digweed- northern exposure, vol. 1
moodymann- silent introduction
kevin saunderson- faces & phases
massive attack- mezzanine
(you say blue lines, i say mezzanine)
air- moon safari
cassius- 1999
basement jaxx- remedy
richie hawtin- decks, efx, & 909
matthew dear- backstroke

there's a shitload more i'd pick, but i'm too tired to get into it all and to argue about what is considered "electronica" or not.

mostly newer stuff (mid-90s to present) and your opinion probably differs than mine.

Help me here... artists like Pole, Keith Fullerton Whittman , Tangerine Dream, Blithe Sons are not electronica... I get confused with ambient and electronica

Another Green World rules, however.

i don't really consider tricky, dj shadow, massive attack or portishead as "electronica" as i find them very earthy and human. If you're going by "anything with a beat" standards, public enemy, beck, de la soul, the fugees, cornershop, and a host of others are much more important.

besides everyone knows Bjork and Radiohead have done more for electronica (and continue to do so i might add) than any other cut chemist or dj i can think of.

all in all brian eno is the most important man in the history of electronica, amibient, mood music, whatever. he's the john lennon of experimental music.

start there then move forward...

I have problems with this statement. It assumes electronic music by nature is cold and distant, and these are exceptions.

I love all of those artists and I would classify them as electronica.

Maybe it's just me but this post got all messed up when people strayed away from Aimarr's template of posting great Electronica albums & started worrying about what is & isn't Electronica, who was a forefather & how important they were etc etc. I don't care how important an artist is what decade they did what- if you don't site a solid album that sounds great today that someone reading this can go out & buy, you're not helping the Electronica novices here at Obner. I know the history, a lot of you do, but you don't have to in order to enjoy the music. So let's get back to albums for the sake of the board. Besides, Eno didn't really do that much that Tangerine Dream hadn't already & no one has mentioned Herbie Hancock

not a complete list or even a "classics only" list just a list of stuff I listen to & would reccomend

Adam F - Colours
Passengers - Original Soundtracks
Kraftwerk - The Man-Machine
Kraftwerk - Autobahn
LTJ Bukem - Progression Sessions V 1
Gus Gus - Polydistortion
Carl Craig - More Songs About Revolutionary Food & Art
Innerzone Orchestra - Programmed
Detroit Experiment- s/t
Meat Beat Manifesto - Satyricon
Meat Beat Manifesto - Actual Sounds + Voices
Cabaret Voltaire - Microphonies
Cabaret Voltaire - The Mix Up
David Holmes - Let’s Get Killed
B12 - Electrosoma
Front 242 - Official Version
Front 242 - Front by Front
Plaid - Double Figure
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92
Global Communication - 76:14
Orbital - In/Sides
Orbital - Orbital
Amon Tobin - Supermodified
Amon Tobin - Permutation
Underworld - 2nd Toughest In The Infants
Underworld - dubnobasswithmyheadman
Tricky - Maxinquaye
The Orb - U.F.Orb
The Orb - Orbs Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld
Boards of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children
Coldcut - Journeys by DJ
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
Massive Attack – Blue Lines
Massive Attack - Protection/ No Protection
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
As One - Planetary Folklore
4 Hero- Two Pages
Moodyman - Silent Introduction
Roni Size Reprezent- New Forms
