http://pitchforkmedia.com/features/weekly/05-04-04-the-indestructible-beat.shtml

are there any other fans of afrobeat out there besides the usual (billy g, polly six, fnb)?

if it's not "Funky Hi-life", I want no part in it.

actually, King Sunny Ade was here the other night (I didn't go because tickets were expensive as hell and it isn't summer) and played until like 3:30 AM. Does he usually do this? I'm not sure how he got around noise statutes, but i find that fucking incredible for a guy of his age.

i went to high school with a kid in Antibalas and have seen them play a bunch of times, but that's about the extent of my knowledge.

I skim read the article. I give pitchfork credit for branching out and most of the stuff he recommends is very good, but he's kind of sloppily interchanged the term afrobeat with African music in general. Lots of stuff he recommends is not afrobeat. I kind of think he knows that too but really wanted to recommend a lot of stuff and figured he wouldn't be doing another feature on any other african genres anytime soon.

np: The JB's "Bring the Funk on Down"

i think i sloppily titeld this thread too. i throw the term afrobeat around too when what i'm talking about really doesn't fall under that genre.

Worth a look into if you're a fan of Eno produced Talking Heads. Eno was fully engulfed in Fela Kuti around that time & you can hear it in the Heads stuff. Eno said during that period he owned more albums by Kuti than any other artist.

That's true for me now if I count all the cd 2fer reissues of Fela albums that I have as 2 albums rather than 1.

I haven't explored much beyond Fela Kuti, but he's terrific so I should dig deeper ASAP.

Wow. That's a realy cool thing to find out.
Especially considering Eno and afrobeat are currently two of my main (aural) fixations. (:wink:)

Lately I'm loving the links between Afrobeat-->Ghanaeze music-->Ethiopian music-->Reggae

I bought part 2 of the Ghana Sounds compilation. nice stuff.

I've seen Antibalas a bunch of times and plan to go again when they come back to town in June. I also saw them play with Femi Kuti, which was the bomb. Whole lotta shakin' goin' on.
