Let me know what you think. It doesn't start in this area until the 28th.

Between the WTF podcast (Marc Maron is in it, and it's being promoted on the podcast) and Birbiglia on Twitter (and his youTube video promotion with Ira Glass), I feel like I have to see it.

great fun, so grim and ultra violent but without being too leery it transfers the comic
to screen exactly as it should and I absolutely loved it, mind you I was very stoned...

Loved everything Rian Johnson has done, so Looper is pretty high on my to-see list. Has anyone seen the 70mm print of The Master? Can't recall if anyone has caught a screening.

i went to the 2nd screening. the 70mm is gorgeous. i'm sure the 35mm will look good, too. i'm not as high on the movie as a lot of people have been, but i mostly enjoyed it. the acting performances are terrific. joaquin phoenix seems to be getting the most praise, but hoffman and adams are also top-notch.

Yeah, Fu and I were discussing this on twitter--the film looked fantastic from frame one. I was horrified and excited when Joaquin's pores where in full view--a testament to the clarity of the prints. And, much like you I agree with the much lauded performances.

The problem, at least to me, was there was no conflict per se. I get what people are going to say was the conflict--but was it enough to hinge a film upon? The third act especially was weak, imo. Maybe I went in expecting too much. I had barred myself from watching the trailer more than once, or reading/viewing behind the scenes things, etc. And, especially with the run PTA has had--I expected amazing things. And, maybe this is one of those films that I need to re-watch and explore further. I'm certainly open to seeing it again--which, I suppose is a good sign (or naivete that it'll get better with more viewings). In any event, it wasn't what I had hoped for--but will presumably be neck and neck with Lincoln come awards season.

I also saw John Carter this weekend, and this might come odd after reviewing The Master, but I actually kinda dug it. It wasn't extraordinary by any means, but it was fun. I kinda wish it had done well enough domestically to warrant the trilogy (or at least sequel) intended.

Saw the new Resident Evil.
It sucked.

Saw The House at the End of the Street.
Jennifer Lawrence is hot. Otherwise forgettable.

I also think John Carter wasn't as bad as the reviews claim. Of course, I read all the books in study hall in junior high, so I had the nostalgic-without-giving-a-shit-if-it-was-faithful-to-the-original attitude. There must be some German word for that, right?

It was fine. A decent, if unspectacular action movie. Although it was one of the most violent movies that I have ever seen. Pretty unrelentless and fairly graphic -- images of people being skinned, slo-mo shots of bullets ripping into people's faces, etc.
And it was a constant barrage of these images -- in 3D.
So if that's your thing, go for it.

I finally saw the Batman movie last week. I think it was the first time I've ever gone to a movie by myself. Kind of weird because I've been to shows by myself, and that's way more awkward.

Anyway, it was good. I think I like it the best of the trilogy, but I'll have to watch Begins again. Definitely thought it was better than Dark Knight which had a really crappy third act.

I also need to watch this again with subtitles. There were several moments when I couldn't understand what anyone was saying, between Bale's Batman voice, Bane's muffled croak, and the theater's shitty sound. Aside from Bane's voice, this movie did seem to have great sound design, though. Quiet in all the right parts. The overall mood and feel of it was perfect.

i agree that the 3rd act is the weak spot.

i understand what PTA's goal was there, but it didn't connect for me. i contend that i was lucky to see it early while there was still some mystery (for instance, most people in line that night thought it was straight-up about scientology) and didn't have hype (aside from "omg, pta") leading to high expectations. plenty of great scenes made up for the slip-ups, though. and it's still in my top tier for 2012 movies.

Wow. Haven't posted in this thread in a while...

Raid Redemption
- Even by action movie standards, the plot here is ghostly thin. I almost see more of a stunt/fight performance art movie. Like, I dunno, a opera/ballet or some shit, but with more knives, guns, and broken bones.

Batman Rises - Enjoyed it. Thought it was a good ending to the trilogy.

Expendables 2
- Loved it. The first one sliiiightly had a cool/dark tone to it, but this one is over-the-top silly blow-em-up fun. All the new people - the girl, the kid, JCVD, and the expanded Bruce Willis role were great. I was hoping they could make Chuck Norris look dangerous and cool but instead he looked like a pudgy G.I. Joe cartoon. Bleh. Also the Ahnold references were lame. Still, I'm satisfied with this.

The Warrior's Way
- This came out a while ago, missed it in the theater, finally saw it. One of those "Outsider comes to town, and learns how to become part of a community, while teaching the townspeople how to stand up for themselves against the big bad guy. Kind of a cliche, but it mixes the old wild west and the far east ninja stuff in a cool way (much better than say, Shanghi Noon, and I'm a huge Jackie Chan fan!). Plus there's a cute baby. Recommended if you like Matrix/300/Crouching Tiger-type action.

Battleship - They actually do a kind of real-live Battleship game in this movie. But they are playing for life on this earth as we know it! Other than that, this movie was terrible.

Safe - Another Jason Statham movie where he gets to be all Jason Stathamy. Nothing new, not bad.

Hugo - Good movie, good casting. Some people thought this was a snooze but I really liked it. I knew nothing of the story (never read the book) so I was genuinely hooked on the mystery all the way.

21 Jump Street
- I thought it was funny. The comedy was silly and very self-aware.

Code 46 - Kinda like a star-crossed romance Gattaca (with a little Eternal Sunshine thrown in) but even more indie. Sometimes I feel like movies like this take a long time to tell the story they want to tell, and this one is no exception. Also movies like this tend to have unsatisfying endings. Chalk this one up to a lost afternoon.

A Scanner Darkly - I've liked/loved every other Philip K Dick story-turned-movie so I said why not. There's so much paranoia and near-schizophrenia that when all is said and done you're almost as numb as a strung out Keanu Reeves. Not my fav PKD thing but still it could have been A LOT worse.

Phew! I think that catches me up! Oh, and I also saw The Artist. I'm fine with it winning Best Picture.

whats not to like really, its great! but...
most disappointing part of the evening apart from the twat in a fuckin' bobble hat
sitting in the row in front of me were the trailers for The Hobbit and Tarantino's new
film that both looked so disappointing I was still reeling from the shock of the shite
as the Orange ads got my goat once again. Hobbiton looked pretty n all but just
more of the same old bloody Middle Earth gubbins which doesn't exactly fill me with joy
and it's in 3fuckinD. Tarantino's Django Unchained looked an absolute MESS - Christ,
Hell On Wheels looks better than this!
but yeah the Bond film is dandy, certainly the best since god knows when.

Hilarious throughout. Proving that good films do come out of Ireland.

This wasn't too bad. Lots of the actors/actresses from The State.

That's because it was directed by David Wain.

probably expected too much and actually gave up in despair about halfway through
as it was a piss-poor rip-off of Shaun of The Dead with none of the wit, more Eartha Kitt.
3/10 (for the poster)

Skyfall. this was a lot of fun. the franchise has moved on from the old films, but still borrows from them with some ridiculous stunts, plot holes, etc. javier bardem's character is sort of weak, but i loved his entrance. it's a bond movie. you pretty much know what you're in for. i'd say it's a step up from quantum of solace but not quite on the level of casino royale.

Lincoln. obviously, this movie comes with a lot of hype surrounding daniel day-lewis. i think he lives up to it. from everything i've read about lincoln's mannerisms, he appears to nail the role. otherwise, i liked it. there wasn't as much mindless exposition as i expected. the political strategy was related to the audience in a pretty respectable way. and i was sort of surprised by how funny it was. my main issue was that it tried to pack a plethora of information in a tidy 2+ hours and some topics are breezed over to the point where one significant event is embarrassingly sardined in.
