So I've been wanting to make a covers mix. Originally my plan was to make a 90s one, maybe an 80s one, definitely an oldies one. But then I was like, meh, I'll just throw them all on one mix. As usual, I'd prefer to have everything sound nice and clean - so no demos/outtakes/live recordings.

So far I have:

Outrageous Cherry - Sign of the Times
Self - Ana Ng
Doug Martsch - Reel Around The Fountain
The Ergs - Hey Jealousy
Probably something from the new Rose Melberg cover album
Probably something from YLT's Fakebook
And then I'm pouring through tributes to Donovan, the Wipers, Bum, the Troggs, et al

punch brothers - down along the dixie line (gillian welch) is probably the only time I can say a cover of a welch/rawlings song has ever been better than the original.
old crow medicine show - back home again (john denver) is the best cover on a john denver cover album that has a lot of good ones (and dave matthews)
jai paul - crush (jennifer paige) is the best

I don't know why it's not on their Youtube page, but this is one of my favorites of that AV Club covers series:

http://www.avclub.com/articles/mac-dema ... zer,93891/

I also really like Low doing "Africa" by Toto and Wye Oak doing Danzig's "Mother".

Done with the first one. Due to it being culled from a lot of singer-songwriter tribute albums, it leans pretty mellow/somber, but there's a few fun cuts in there. The next two volumes are a bit more lively/faster.

A Tribute to Tributes: The Songs of Tributes

01. Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs - Different Drum
02. Doug Martsch - Reel Around The Fountain
03. J Mascis - No Good Trying
04. Honey - No One Wants An Alien
05. My Morning Jacket - Leaving On A Jet Plane
06. Magnetic North - You Still Believe In Me
07. Telekinesis - Can't Get It Out Of My Head
08. Luna - La Poupee Qui Fait Non
09. Buffalo Tom - Merry Go Round
10. Vic Chestunutt - Where's That At?
11. Carolyn Mark & The Room Mates - The Eternal Idea
12. Mark Lanegan - Red Balloon
13. Shane Nicholson - Rider On The Wheel
14. Dawn McCarthy & Bonnie Prince Billy - So Sad
15. Pale Hose & Rider - There Is An Ocean
16. Tanya Donelly - Heart Of Gold
17. The Posies - Richie Dagger's Crime
18. Marshall Arts - Bad Town
19. Murder Beach - 8 Great Ways
20. Warm Soda - I'm Waiting For The Man

Bort, you're giving Rads a run for his money. I'm digging on both of these. My faves:

Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs - Different Drum
Doug Martsch - Reel Around The Fountain
My Morning Jacket - Leaving On A Jet Plane
Telekinesis - Can't Get It Out Of My Head
Luna - La Poupee Qui Fait Non
Buffalo Tom - Merry Go Round
Vic Chestunutt - Where's That At?
Tanya Donelly - Heart Of Gold
Warm Soda - I'm Waiting For The Man
Franz Ferdinand - All My Friends (LCD Soundsystem)
Joan Jett - Real Wild Child (Iggy Pop)

By the way, where's is Radcliffe's new cover mix. C'mon man, you said it was done!

Thanks to you both.

Works for me. Are you clicking on "free" and waiting for the 30 second processing time?

Weird. I don't even get that far. I click on the "Someday You'll Remember Me" link and it times out before I ever get to the download page. I downloaded Volume 8 and 9 just fine. I even tried a couple different browsers. No biggie either way - just wanted to make you aware. Thanks again, I love these things.

I've been enjoying this one. I've never been that big of a Melvins fan, but I enjoyed listening to this album at a 40th birthday party recently.
Jello Biafra sings on the track.

To be precise, originally by Johnny O'Keefe in 1958...

Although first become a hit with the Jerry Allison version that same year:

Also in '58, and probably the most popular version, the Killer...

And then in 1980 it was revived by Teenage Head (probably my favorite version)...

Iggy found it six years later.

I did not know any of that! However, the cover is from the Iggy Pop tribute album, so I figure that's who goes in the parenthesis.

i don't know much about this instance, but sometimes a cover is clearly a cover of the cover more so than the original. For instance Jeff Buckley was covering the John Cale version of Hallelujah. I know there are other obvious examples but I'm kind of tired right now.

Yeah another one is Nirvana (Unplugged) doing "Where Did You Sleep Last Night," crediting Leadbelly, as that was who he was tributing, even though Leadbelly didn't write the song.

Tributing should be a word.
