I'm having my wedding and having to pick out music to play while people are gathering and maybe while people are getting food at the reception and I have no idea what to play. It's going to be a lot of older people and family coming, so I'm trying to think of things that everyone can maybe enjoy, or would just be good in the background or whatever. Any ideas?

I'm going through a similar effort right now (though mine also includes the dance piece).

I basically came to a similar conclusion as Drinky for the non-dancey time.

It's on August 10. We were already married in Korea because she's Korean and we needed to get her visa. It feels a bit anti-climatic, but my whole family very into this wedding and keep asking me to pick the music, which I have kept delaying. Thanks for the suggestions.

Here's what I came up with.

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL ... re=mh_lolz

1) The Good the bad and the queen- Green Fields
2) Busker Busker- Cherry Blossom Ending (Korean band)
3) Bob Marley- Is this love
4) Bad Brains- Stay close to me
5) Busker Busker- Night View of Yeosu
6) Wilco- I'm the man who loves you
7) Beach boys- Wouldn't it be nice

The wife just shot down the bad brains song

I only watched the first couple of songs, but that's pretty great. Looks like a really fun band.

For dinner music, I basically used the O Brother ost.

Big smile at this one. I know the drill.

You ever consider Grateful Dead? (I say this as the husband of a Deadhead.)

'80s hits are usually pretty universally applicable in those types of events

oh, and CONGRATULATIONS!

I'm not familiar with the Grateful Dead, but if there is a song that you think would be good, you can post a video and I would consider it.

They are awesome. Churn out a whole bunch of Springsteen, Neil, Paul Simon, Queen, etc. It's going to be a party!

Don't overthink it man. Remember, it's a party and celebration. Pick stuff that's fun.

I was asked by our band to pick songs to play before we arrived and for set breaks and at first I picked all these slow, earnest songs about love , et al, that meant something to my wife and I. She came back as was like "uhhh, these are great songs but you may want to pick it up a little". She was totally right. Keep the energy up. You won't remember it playing anyway.

Oh, and I'll 2nd FT's comment. Our band specialized in 80's hits and it went over like gangbusters.

Throw on some Eddie Money "Take Me Home Tonight" and watch the magic happen.

I'm sure that whatever music I pick will probably be one of the less important parts of the whole thing. It's just another thing in a long list of things that I have to pick.

Indeed. I made a mix of about 4 hours of music for our Dj to play and I heard about 15 minutes of it.

I pretty clearly remember about 10 songs, (some of which we didn't pick). But most of the ones we told the DJ were most important to play I can imagine the scenario pretty clearly.

I most clearly remember "Call Me Maybe" due to the disbelief on my wife's face, the sheer joy on my nieces face and winning a bet with myself that he would play it.

But as long as the music is fun and people are dancing and having a good time it doesn't matter too much.
