Took the GRE and applying to grad school, but even if I don't get in, I'll just sub.

15 year haul as a teacher (13 with you guys), time to shift gears.

UT Austin, Music and Human Learning.

Considering NYU for Songwriting /Film Scoring and USC for Film Scoring

But I co-own this studio in Austin and the UT degree could land me in professor-land somewhere, or in the poor house.

I've definitely had enough of this looney bin and its hair curling horror stories.

I've got 18 in. Thinking of getting out at 20 and finding something part time to supplement my retirement income (basically half of what I make now). Good luck with it, Phil.

If that's a direction you want to go, I suggest foregoing the extra schoolin' and just get down to scoring. Film students are always looking for free music, and Austin's full of students. Just help out a project and get your rep started. You could do that as a side while the rest of your plans unfold.

And good luck!

Holy hell would you be good at film scoring. And hey, I know someone who does production up here. Connections, mang.

I've done some film score work for free. It's a lot of work to do for free, but hook me up with your connections.

I thought about NYU and USC not necessarily for the education as much as for the networking.

Ah, that makes sense then. Film bidniss is all about the networking.

And as for the amount of work, you should take a page from a successful film scorer up here. He's notorious for taking his fee up front, using it for a month-long drinking binge, then on the last day possible sitting down at his keyboard and improvising/recording as he watches a rough cut of the film. Total time investment: running time of the film.

I imagine the above scenario could be accomplished minus the drinking binge.
