Are you talking of Sting solo or with The Police?

I saw a website a few years back that blew off any contribution that Sting ever had to The Police. I don't get that.

I will admit that I don't own all of the Police albums. I do however own every Sting album. Even the new one that suck ass IMO. I think I hold him in such high regard not just because he is an amazing writer, dating back to the early days of the Police, but that he surrounds himself with some of the best musicians in the world (Bradford Marsalis, Vinnie Calaiuta) to make his songs sound the way he wants them to sound, great. He is in my top three favorite singer/songwriters all of time. I will always back him up no matter how many Jaguar commercials/videos he makes.

The Police?!?!

Right about now NWA court is in full effect.
Judge Dre presiding in the case of NWA versus the police department.
Prosecuting attourneys are MC Ren Ice Cube and Eazy muthafuckin E.
Order order order. Ice Cube take the muthafuckin stand.
Do you swear to tell the truth the whole truth
and nothin but the truth so help your black ass?

Why don't you tell everybody what the fuck you gotta say?

Fuck tha police
Comin straight from the underground
Young nigga got it bad cuz I'm brown
And not the other color so police think
They have the authority to kill a minority

Fuck that shit, cuz I ain't tha one
For a punk muthafucka with a badge and a gun
To be beatin on, and throwin in jail
We could go toe to toe in the middle of a cell

Fuckin with me cuz I'm a teenager
With a little bit of gold and a pager
Searchin my car, lookin for the product
Thinkin every nigga is sellin narcotics

You'd rather see me in the pen
Then me and Lorenzo rollin in the Benzo
Beat tha police outta shape
And when I'm finished, bring the yellow tape
To tape off the scene of the slaughter
Still can't swallow bread and water

I don't know if they fags or what
Search a nigga down and grabbin his nuts
And on the other hand, without a gun they can't get none
But don't let it be a black and a white one
Cuz they slam ya down to the street top
Black police showin out for the white cop

Ice Cube will swarm
On any muthafucka in a blue uniform
Just cuz I'm from the CPT, punk police are afraid of me
A young nigga on a warpath
And when I'm finished, it's gonna be a bloodbath
Of cops, dyin in LA
Yo Dre, I got somethin to say

Fuck the police (4X)

I do. People don't like Sting. The real truth is that all three of those guys are/were assholes (especially Stewart Copeland: a great drummer but an intolerable, miserable person by all accounts)

Combine this with the fact Stew's dad was a their manager----he is apparently no bowl of cherries himself; no surprise why these guys couldn't get along despite their success.

Ghost in the Machine is a great album, I can take or leave all of the others. Summers and Copeland made Sting feel like less of a wanker. I'm sure he brought in tons of cheesy crap to them like he does on his solo work (Fields of Gold anyone?) adn they were there to filter it.

Saw them live when I was 13 years young. Great show, I still remember it to this day. (22 years ago)

Does your box set have kinda muffled sound? Last time I slapped one of those discs in I was thinkin' it sounded kinda subpar.

I was lucky to be able to upgrade all my Police vinyl at once when BMG had the box set cheap, & I got that live record as a free bonus. The whole schmere was like, $25. I like how the live record kinda bookends their career, with the 1 early radio show & 1 big-ass stadium gig.

Anyone have the "De Doo Doo Doo" vinyl picture disc shaped like a badge? I need to see what that thing goes for on eBay...

I never did replace my cassettes. Ghost was a standout for me growing up, but I enjoyed all of their music. Dick or not and not knowing the drama of the band, I always thought Stewart was a helluva drummer; and, all 3 each deserving the title "talented musician." Perhaps a comp is in order to refresh my nostalgia for those ealrly days.

As far as Sting alone, I suckered myself to buy Nothing like the Sun when it came out. It was good on a fall/wintry day. Didn't hate it, but it never prompted me to buy his solo stuff again.

That's a little bit of horseshit sprinkled like fairy dust. Back in the day, the Police were beloved by jocks and housewives. Still are, as far as I'm concerned (but, of course, I'm a smirking post-punk hipster).

Not the first couple albums. It wasn't until the third that they were really considered in the mainstream and it was Synchronicity that really put them over-the-top.

I never hated or liked them. I don't really care for Sting's voice. They're kind of a "whatever" band for me.

Yes you are. And you reaffirm that almost daily.

But you look good in those heels, though.

Besides, Mr. I-Was-There-So-I-Know-Better, The Police were beloved by jocks and housewives after Eddie Murphy sang Roxanne in 48 Hours. Not before that. Even then those jocks and housewives didn't think much of the first two albums and only bought the 45's.

Guess what? I was there, too.

I think maybe some of the early stuff sounds a little muffled on disk 1... but overall the 4 disks sound pretty good...

I may have to go back and check...

Nope. Take a wild guess why Eddie Murphy chose to sing "Roxanne" as comedy.

I don't know about in Canada but I don't remember the Police having much mainstream commercial success in the US until Everything She Does is Magic. Roxanne may be their signature tune now but I don't remember it being popular at all at the time of release.

I was a huge fan of their first three albums in my young teens. The Police and Talking Heads were the first "alt rock" bands I got into, and were a gateway to other great stuff like Gang of Four, Clash, Pistols, etc. I had not listened to them in years but put the first three on my mp3 player and some songs have come on when I've been listening in random mode. I still find 'em enjoyable enough esp the lesser played tracks off of Zenyatta Mondatta.

Not sure what Elvis' beef with them was, but Johnny Rotton's thrown a lot of scorn their way. Reggae had a pretty big scene in London in the late 70's and early 80's and a lot of punkers looked down on the Police's "white reggae" riffs. Maybe Elvis did too.
