N.E.R.D. could have been the best band right now if their second album didn't suck.

So could've Tag Team but, alas "Whoomp! There It Is" became the proto-"Lapdance"...

As far as best band right now, did you have any doubt that I wouldn't pick The Mountain Goats. "Sunset Tree" officially releases a week from Tuesday - buy it, bitches....

and, yes, my choice means more because it's bolder and bigger, just like Chris Rock.

[/quote]Those who came on-board with Girls Can Tell, and those that came on-board before that...

Thanks to FT and his compelling review of KTM I came on board AFTER its release, then worked my way back. Maybe my issues with GCT solely lies within the material. I still think it's good, just not as good as the others.
Personal preference here, no right or wrong.

Am I the only person who thinks that Beulah did what Spoon should do, only better. (Holler at your folks Beulah, get back together)

Gimme Fiction is the best of the 3 Spoon rekkids I've heard.

There is no best band in the world right now. It sucks. I always liked throwing out REM or U2 or Oasis or whoever.

(its probly U2 though)

I don't know about "best band", but they were defintely voted "worst lighted band", and Bill Berry won "most likely to become a captain"...

First off, this is fucking great.

People who liked Spoon before GCT came out usually find it too "polished" or "poppy", and something about it bugs them, even though they rarely come up with one central idea that doesn't make it seem like they're nitpicking. It's like the difference between Jimmy Eat World's "Clarity" and "Bleed American" - and, yes, I believe that to be a very apt comparison....

Nice one. Put me down for GCT (only Spoon album I own thus far) and Clarity.

If I could fudge an answer, it would be:
Tool + A Perfect Circle - eMotive

If they had stayed together: At The Drive-In, Soundgarden
If they were more profilic, assuming qual material: Tool, Built To Spill
If I knew more of their material maybe: Sleater-Kinney, Modest Mouse

Honorable mentions: Opeth, Wilco, Radiohead
My answer, though I don't know their material as well as I should: Fugazi

And, Well, since they are still together, none of these busters can touch the Stones (hehe) 8)

I have always associated those two bands in the same way, and like them both a ton.

Seriously Beulah, get back together.

Perhaps if you got into Beulah and Girls Can Tell-era Spoon at the same time, I could see the connection there. However, pretty much everything before and since has been quite different than Beulah in my mind.

Not saying they're the best band in the world right now but I think The Shins may hold the title of most popular "indie" band or whatever. I'd say they're in the same category as Spoon but probably more popular overall. I'm not sure this is what you're looking for but when the title "best band" was given to U2 and Radiohead I'm pretty sure it was also when those bands were at the hight of their popularity.

I don't think Dave Matthews holds this title anymore but the argument could certainly be made that they were at one time the biggest band in rock. They were certainly never the best, however.

Yes, Spoon is the best band in the world right now. Were you expecting me to disagree??? Seeing them slay live at SXSW cinched it for me. I do also love Beulah, and lament their demise. Hopefully, Miles Kurosky will pursue a solo career, because he's great. I will hold off until the "official" Hip-D review of Gimme Fiction to re-rank the Spoon catalog...but suffice it to say it shan't be pulling up the rear.

Speaking of Spoon... here's a Popmatters interview with Britt Daniel about Gimme Fiction.

I can hardly wait to hear this album.

I love Spoon...love em, but as some people have said....Best band in the world?? I'm not so sure.

If forced to pick one, I have to say Radiohead

I have listened to A Series of Sneaks and Girls Can Tell each at least once a day for the past 10-14 days, often back to back.

To me, GCT is so smooth. The album artwork of the green and black turntable image just oozes cool. It holds a great set of well thought out, precise songs perfect for driving aimlessly at night somewhere with lots of streetlights. It was almost instantly likeable with slick shots like "Anything You Want", "Take The Fifth" (a-woohoo!) and "Chicago At Night".

ASOS is a looser tumble, rougher around the edges with a more rebellious feel. The individual songs are faster and more ragged that those of GCT, more drums and fewer keys, more passion with less planning.

Where GCT dons some slick Kenneth Cole get up and pays $10 for a cocktail at some neon afflicted bar in the city, ASOS hasn't shaved in a day or two and is walking his raggedy jeansed ass through some neighborhood bars just because.

The glue between the two? To me it's "Believing Is Art".

EDIT: I forgot my point. Duh. ---->

I prefer ASOS because it stands up as a whole album rather than a series of individual songs. Not to malign GCT, but it has a tinge of contrivedness to it that isn't as much to my liking.

According to Neil Young, all rock bands fall into two categories: Beatles or Stones. Taking only part of his idea, I think that GCT is very much Beatles, where ASOS is firmly in Stonesylvania. Since I tend to gravitate towards the Stones/Mats/Crazy Horse end of the spectrum, that probably is why I like ASOS better.

It's also the perfect album to throw on your headphones while you do your grocery shopping.

excellent post

A Series of Sneaks is also my favorite, yet I consider myself more of a Beatles man...interesting.
