Hey - it appears that many of the slowness issues right now are caused by animated avatars. If the site hosting your enormo avatar is a little slow, any thread you've posted in will be slow for anyone with avatars enabled. If more than one person with an animated avatar posts in a thread and both hosts are slow, the problem doubles.

Turning off avatars will fix the problem for individual users, and I can put in a fix to disallow large avatars altogether, but for now I will ask people to consider avoiding avatars that are larger than a couple hundred K.

Thanks.

For example, I currently cannot open any thread in which Dalen has posted without turning off avatars.

Mine is 5k at most.

Shouldn't the thread load, and just leave his avatar blank, until that part loads?

Yeah I don't think 50x50 pics with 6 frames of animation are the problem here.

If you right-click an image and click "Properties" you can see it's size. Yours is 141 K which is big but not huge. I'd say it's right under the upper limit.

I'm assuming Dalen has posted in "The National - Alligator" thread?

Because until now none of the sites hosting the avatars have been so slow that they kept threads from loading. I tried entering the link to your avatar directly into the location bar and the request timed out.

I wasn't trying to call you out - I just noticed that the threads I couldn't get into all had your avatar in common.

I loved the dancing bear and I love TwilightKid's as well. It's a shame such entertainment causes problems.

It's not that entertainment is the problem, it's linking to slow sites.

Host that stuff yourself people. ;)

Goddammit!! It's a week later and somebody still has something slowing up the works, and it's gotta be an avatar, because turning them off gets me into multiple threads that don't load otherwise.

Find something funny and small, peoples!

Even though I'm on DSL, I'm turning avatars off until you fuckers stop this.

Yeah, like you care.
