Dunno, the church's record in Europe in the 40's is suspect, this dude would have been right in the thick of it.

Cliff Clavin is pope?????????

That's quite a development.

Course you know, Sammy, there have been ay-uh remarkable number of unusual papistic leaders over the centuries, beginning with Pope Wormbiten of Dangleburg dating back to the Polish Inquistion of 1148....

Quote:
Born in Marktl am Inn, in Bavaria, Germany, Ratzinger entered a preparatory seminary in 1939. In 1943, at the age of 16 he was, along with the rest of his class, drafted into the Flak or anti-aircraft corps. He went into basic training for the Wehrmacht infantry in November of 1944. In 1945 he was interned in a POW camp as a German soldier. By June he was released, and he and his brother (Georg) reentered seminary. On June 29, 1951, he and his brother were ordained by Cardinal Faulhaber of Munich. His dissertation (1953) was on Saint Augustine, his Habilitationschrift (second dissertation) on Saint Bonaventure.

The Herald says he deserted, a relatively honorable choice under the circumstances.

"Cardinal Ratzinger, who turns 78 on April 16, deserted the German Army during the second world war, but was sent to a prison-of-war camp when the allies reached his town. "

At least he's really old. Damn, do you think they voted for him because it was practically his birthday?

Good to see Lt. Frank Drebin is staying active after retirement.

Ohh gooody.

I'm just curious, but how many people around here take the whole role of the Pope seriously? I mean, we're all pretty open-minded around here so I'm just curious if it's something that's huge for many that are here.

I'm in the camp where it doesn't make too much of a difference to me being that I'm not very religious. But I suppose if this dude is to be very old-school and can pull some influence with the religious right in this country then we could have some problems.

To my calculations, with there being 115 Cardinals.
Every Cardinal comes from a pool numbering roughly 52 million.

How did they ever pick a former Nazi as one of those? I keed.....

I am sure that the new Pope will have some interesting things to say about his past, at least I hope so. 78 years old though...yikes... Was that on purpose?

Mainly I just want the third world to have condoms. That's pretty much it for me. The last pope had a lot of influence on this one.

Also, I remain annoyed at the crushing of the liberation theology movements in latin america, which basically said Jesus didn't want people opressed or disappeared or otherwise death-squadded, and probably would have been down with some, you know, sharing and shit. Even more, I am annoyed that, not having been excommunicated, they still count me in their little tallies of how they're the biggest faith going and such, when I have never of my own volition said or done anything to indicate that I'm down with that.

That's a valid point you bring up, but answer me this: is your mother's vagina Catholic?

(blatant David Cross appropriation)

BJW: Maybe you should just get excommunicated. It sounds like fun and I bet all the cool kids are doing it.
